Hand Sanitizers

Question: With the spread of the Coronavirus, people are being advised to use hand sanitizers frequently. Is it permissible to use a hand sanitizer that contains alcohol in it?

Answer: There are two types of alcohol. The first type is alcohol that is extracted from grapes or dates. It is Haram and impure.

The second type of alcohol is synthetic. Synthetic alcohol refers to alcohol formulated from chemical substances.

The alcohol used in hand sanitizers is synthetic. Therefore, it is permissible to use a hand sanitizer that has synthetic alcohol.

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whom amongst us You keep alive, then let such a life be upon Islam, and whom amongst us You take unto Yourself, then let such a death be upon faith. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not let us stray after him. [Sunan Abi Dawud] (Aameen)
