Anas bin Maalik RA reports: "Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) performed the Walimah of Safiyyah RA with dates and Saweeq (a barley drink)".

Commentary: (Saweeq is a drink made of parched barley). Sayyiditina Safiyyah bint Hu-yay bin Akhtab RA was from a Jewish family and from among the offspring of Harun 'Alayhis Salaam. In the 7th year hijri after the Battle of Khaybar, Sayyidina Rasulullah (Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam) married her. Sayyidina Rasulullah (Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam) once said to her: "Your grandfather (Harun 'Alayhis Salaam) was a Nabi (Prophet). Your uncle (Musa 'Alayhis Salaam) was a Nabi, and now your husband is a Nabi". ~ Tirmizi ~

The Walimah was performed whilst on a journey. What was served in the Walimah? Different sayings are narrated in the Ahaadith. In some it is narrated that Hayse which is a type of sweet dish, was served. In some cheese is mentioned. It is apparent, since they were on a journey, therefore whatever was available at breakfast time by Sayyidina Rasulullah (Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam) and his close associates, was included in the Walimah (Walimah is a feast normally held on the day after the wedding).

A Selection of Padkos Recipes

SOFT PURIE RECIPE

Ingredients:

• 3 cups cake flour
• 3 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 3 Tbsp butter
• 1 cup milk
• 1/2 cup water

Method:
Mix together dry ingredients and add butter. Warm together milk and water add into flour and make a soft dough. Roll thicker than roti and fry in hot oil. Purees stay soft and fluffy for days.

The Preacher

A preacher was riding his bicycle down the street when he noticed a little boy standing in a yard next to the curb with a lawn mower. He asked the little fellow what he was doing, to which the little fellow replied, "I want to sell this mower so I can buy a bicycle."

The preacher said, "Well son I need a lawn mower and I have this bicycle. Maybe we can work out a trade. Why don't you ride my bicycle around the block and see what you think about it?"

The little boy went around the block and when he returned the preacher was sitting on the curb red faced and out of breath. The preacher said, "I have pulled on this rope since you left and I can't get this thing to start."

The little boy softly said, "You have to cuss."

The preacher replied, "I haven't cussed in so long I have forgotten how."

The little boy replied, "if you pull on that rope long enough you will remember."
