Taming the Trolley: Part 3

3. Be Moderate, Don’t be a Miser

Be Moderate
‘A penny saved is a penny earned’ is a well-known proverb which most probably originated in the 17th century. However, a thousand years earlier, our beloved Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) showed us how to manage our personal finances and encouraged moderation in spending and saving our resources.
Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) advised us to control our spending by means of which we may find our current salaries or income to be sufficient for our needs. Imbalance in spending may result in a cycle where one consumes more than required and then needs more income to feed his greed.

Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) is reported to have said:

الاقتصاد في النفقة نصف المعيشة،

Moderation in expenditure is half of livelihood. (Mishkaat)

Moderation and simplicity must be the rule. We should also not be concerned with keeping up appearances. It is more respectable and honourable, in this world and the hereafter, to leave the holiday and sit at home or ignore the Black Friday specials and sit with what we have, rather than try to pull along just to keep appearances, and feel the pinch at the end of the month to the extent that we have to borrow for necessities. read more

Sajdah of Shukar

Question: What is Sajdah Shukar, what are the benefits and how is it performed?

Answer: It is imperative for every believer to continuously display gratitude to Almighty Allah for the numerous bounties that Almighty Allah continues to confer upon every one of us, all the time.

Be that as it may, when a person is bestowed with a bounty or receives some good news then one of the ways of displaying gratitude is to perform two Rakaats of Salaah of Shukr.

Raasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) performed two Rakaats Salaah of Shukar upon the conquest of Makkah Mukarramah.

If for some reason one is not able to perform two Rakaats Salaah of Shukar then it is Mustahab (recommended) to make a Sajdah of Shukar.

The prerequisites and conditions of the Sajah of Shukar are the same as those of Salaah and Sajdah Tilawah.

One is required to have Wudhu and the Sajdah will be made in the direction of the Qibla.

Commencing with Takbeer, a person will go into Sajdah, praise Almighty Allah, recite the Tasbeeh of Sajdah and then, after some time, rise up from Sajdah saying Takbeer again.

With this, the Sajdah of Shukar will be completed.

Sajdah of Shukar should not be performed during Sunrise, Zawaal and at Sunset. It is Makrooh to perform it after any Salaah. [Radul Muhtaar Vol 2 Page 120]

When a person expresses Shukr to Allah Taáala, Allah Taáala increases his bounties upon that person.

And Almighty Allah Knows Best

RECIPE

Methi Masala Recipe

  • 500g methi seeds / fenugreek
  • 500g coarse salt.. its important to use coarse salt and not fine salt
  • 2 to 4 tbslp arad / turmeric
  • 500g dry crushed red chillies
  • 100g ground hing / asoefaetida
  • 750ml oil
  • 6 whole dry red chillies

If your coarse salt is very thick crush it up but please do not use fine salt as it will release moisture and your masala will deteriorate. Put salt in a moderately heated oven and allow to dry out. this helps in preservation of masala.  Heat oil in thick deep pan till oil begins to exude a bluish smoke. remove from heat and add in whole red chillies and crushed methi and stir well for about 2 minutes so that methi is well coated with oil.  Add salt and stir for 1 more minute. Return to stove and add red crushed chiilies and arad/turmeric and over very low heat stir continously for about 15 minutes. Your masala will now be a lovely ruby red colour. Remove from heat and stir in hing. Once cooled pack in bottles for use when required.

THE SMILE

MOTHERLY ADVICE

One week before her wedding, a mother pulls aside her daughter (and bride-to-be). She says, "I will now give you the advice that has been passed down from generation to generation, from woman to woman."

The daughter listened attentively, curious as to what the advice would be.

The mom continued, "Cook a man a fish and you feed him for a day. But teach a man to fish, and you get rid of him for the whole weekend."
