Hajj, one step at a time
By Mumtaz Moosa Saley
Last year I wrote about getting physically fit for hajj, using my own advice I decided that even though I've not been accredited, I would begin preparing for when I do receive my invitation, in sha Allah.
When my sister for Hajj in 2019, I had asked her to keep track of the number of steps done for the period. She recorded that on average 22 000 steps were taken almost daily. Now if you work in an office your step count varies from 2000 to 4000, while females are home average 5000 to 9000 steps a day. This alone should tell us that Hajj is more than financial planning and that physical wellbeing is part of the planning as well.
My husband and I decided that we would, thrice a week to set thirty minutes aside to go for a walk. While thirty minutes is a start, I found that I enjoyed the time. My journey has taught me that every couple needs time away, when you are walking and talking you generally have a good heart to heart conversations so make it a no-phone rule, choose a safe and secure outdoor area and just walk and talk. This journey also taught me the importance of being in good physical shape. Trust me for when you are huffing and puffing after 3km you ask yourself if would you manage the 22 000 steps daily! read more |

When to Make Miswaak
Question: When making Wudhu, should Miswaak be made before or after gargling the mouth?
Answer: It is Sunnah to use the Miswaak after washing the hands and before gargling the mouth.

RECIPE |
Fresh cream apricot turnovers
Ingredients:
2 and ½ cups of flour 3 times
1 and ½ tsp baking powder (sifted into the flour)
250g butter- take out from the freezer and allow to sit for 10 / 15 minutes
125 ml fresh cream with ½ tsp of vanilla essence
Smooth apricot jam (beaten in a bowl) ,
2 egg whites (gently whisked) any left eggs whites.
Method:
Grate the butter into the flour. Rub to form breadcrumbs. Pour into pieces that you are able to manage and roll till slightly thin. Using a glass with a diameter of 6cm cut circles into the dough by pressing down on the glass. Remove and set on some wax wrap. When one batch is completed (batch menaing enough to fill a baking tray( gently rub egg whites around the inner rim of the biscuit. Spoon ½ tsp of gently beaten apricot jam (beat in a bowl with a fork) in the centre. Do not overfill, as they will ooze out when baking – about 10 of mine did that! Place on a baking tray and pop into a pre-heated oven marked 16 for approx 15 minutes. Depending on your oven, you may prefer baking it on a temperature. It should be an ivory golden brown, and not too dark. Remove and set aside on a wire to cool. Once all the biscuits are completely cooled roll around in some castor sugar till well coated. Plate or set aside on a wire rack to cool. Once all the biscuits are completely cooled roll around in some castor sugar till well coated. Plate or package up.N.B this treats don’t keep well, so they’re best eaten super quick. |

THE
SMILE |
BILINGUAL PARROT
Dewey goes to a pet shop, and there he sees a parrot with a red string tied to its left leg and a green string tied to its right leg. He asks the owner the significance of the strings.
"Well, this is a highly trained parrot. If you pull the red string, he speaks French; if you pull the green string, he speaks German," replies the shopkeeper.
"And what happens if I pull both strings at the same time?" Asks Dewey.
"I fall off my perch you idiot!" squawks the parrot.
