How Parents Can Avoid Creating Sibling Rivalry |
Sibling rivalry is as old as the two sons of Adam A.S., Habeel and Qabeel. And that resulted in the first ever murder committed in history. In Surah Yusuf, mention is made of the emotions relating to sibling rivalry.
One of the worst things that can happen to any parent is finding their child becoming rivals as adults. A parent has to play referee his/her entire life. When the grandkids come it gets even worst. Before we go any further, let us first look at what exactly is sibling rivalry.
Sibling rivalry can be defined as competitiveness (sometimes tempered with animosity), between siblings for the attention, affection and approval of their parents. While the parents cannot be blamed in every situation, experts tell us that parents, unknowingly, are the cause of many rivalries. ‘Unknowingly’ is the key word here. Many of us might be creating rivalries between our children without even knowing it. That is why this week, inshaAllah, we will be looking at how we as parents can avoid creating sibling rivalry. SUNNAH |
Sayyadatina Aayeshah (RA) says: "Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) liked to begin with the right while combing his hair, while performing Wudhu and when putting on his shoes". (Also, in every other deed, he first began with the right then the left).
Commentary: This (beginning from the right) is not confined to the three acts mentioned in this Hadith. Sayyidina (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) began everything with the right, that is why 'every other deed' has been added in the translation of the Hadith.
The basic rule is, that all those things that reflect dignity and elegance, while putting on these the right is preferred, and when removing them the left is begun with, as when putting on clothing, shoes etc. When one enters the Masjid, one enters with the right foot and leaves with the left foot first, as this is the place of dignity and greatness. Contrary to this, in those things that do not have elegance in them, the left is preferred when beginning them, and the right when ending them, for instance when entering the toilet. |
