Surah An-Najam 53: - (The Star)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful

“Those who abstain from the major sins and from shameful acts, except minor involvements... 53:32”

COMMENTARY: Allah Forgives the Small Faults, Al-Lamam - (those who abstain from the major sins and from shameful acts, except minor involvements... 53:32)

The preceding verse praises those who follow the right guidance of Allah and do good deeds. In the present verse, it is stated that the good-doers are those who avoid major sins and, especially immoral sins and shameful deeds. There is one exception made by the expression Lamam. It means that they sometimes do commit minor sins [lamam] but that does not exclude them from the category of being Muhsineen [good-doers].

The Companions and their followers interpret the word 'Lamam' in two different ways:

1. Some commentators are of the view that it refers to small faults and minor errors which in Surah An-Nisa' has been described as Sayyi'aat: (if you abstain from the major (sins) out'of what you have been forbidden from We shall write off your minor sins - 4:311'.) Ibn-Kathir has reported this from Sayyidna Ibn Abbas and Abu Hurairah RA.
   
   
2. Some other scholars have held that 'lamam' means, a sin that a person commits incidentally and then repents. After repentance, he never repeats it. Ibn Kathir has reported a narration that even if a person were to commit a major sin incidentally and repents, he will not be excluded from the ranks of the God-fearing people. Verse [3: 135 of Surah 'Ali'Imran: "And those who, when they happen to commit a shameful act or wrong themselves, remember Allah, then, seek forgiveness for their sins - and who is there to forgive sins except Allah? - and do not persist in what they have done, knowingly. [3:135]

It should be noted that overwhelming majority of scholars concur that if a person persists in a minor sin and continues to do it in a determined way so that it becomes a habit, it will no longer be a minor sin, but will turn into a major sin.

NACHOS RECIPE

1 Pkt of Doritos – Fusion flavour
250ml sour cream
Cheese
Optional extras: cooked mushrooms, green peppers, gherkins, etc
Chicken cubed +- 1 ½ cups

Marinate with:
1 tsp salt
½ tsp red chilli powder
½ tsp dhana ground
½ tsp jeero ground
¼ tsp arad
1 tsp red masala

Cook the above in 1 Tbsp ghee/ oil. Once half way cooked add ½ grated tomato.

Once cooked add:
1 Tbsp sweet sour sauce
2 Tbsp sweet chillie sauce – simmer on very low for 5 minutes
Don’t let the sauce dry out.

Method:
Switch on oven at 180 degrees. Than start to layer nachos, reason being that Doritos should not get soft with the chicken sauce. In an oven proof dish – small square / rectangle, layer the base with Doritos crisp +- half the pkt. Then layer the saucy chicken over this, Throw mushrooms, pepper, gherkins, on top of the chicken. Now spread ¾ cup of the sour cream over this. Then layer the rest of the Doritos over the sour cream. Top with grated cheese. Dot with the rest of the sour cream. Sprinkle oregano if desirable. Bake for +- 10 – 15 minutes or until cheese starts to melt. Serve while hot.

KEEPING GRANDPA

At my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary, I was looking through a photo album of their marriage ceremony. "Grandma, so many of these styles have come back over the years," I commented.

Grandma never hesitated. "That's why I've kept Grandpa all this time," she said. "I know he'll be back in style again one of these days."
