Baby Food Sugar Levels in South Africa are Alarming
By Annisa Essack
Wits has collected and analysed the sugar content of 235 baby food items sold in major South African supermarkets, concluding that there’s an urgent need to start regulating sugar in baby foods.
A recent WITS study shows that South Africa has the highest rates of childhood obesity in the world, with an alarming figure of 13% whilst the global average stands at 6%.
This can be attributed to the rapid growth of the country’s commercial food industry which has led to an increase in consumption of easily accessible, cheap and ultra-processed foods, rich in sugar.
The study analysed the sugar content of commercially produced baby food products, including boxes of cereals and jars of processed food – targeted at children under 12 months and sold in supermarkets and other major retailers in South Africa. The items were also checked to see if the content had added sugar or free sugar that is usually found in processed foods. read more |

Extracting A Tooth While Fasting
Question: Will extracting a tooth break my fast?
Answer: Extracting a tooth in itself will not break the fast. However, while extracting the tooth there is a strong possibility that some substance, particle or water may go down the throat which would invalidate the fast. With regards to blood going down the throat, the fast will be invalidated if the amount of blood exceeds the amount of saliva or one can perceive the taste of blood. Keeping the above in mind, it therefore not advisable to extract a tooth while fasting.

Outdoor Reading
A young hunter on his trip to Africa is out away from camp in a quiet clearing. This one particular day, while reading his book, a lion comes and lies down right beside him, so close that the hot warm smell of his breath is wafting over him. He is, as you would suppose, exceedingly uneasy. He closes his eyes, praying ... but when he opens them, he sees another lion approach from the brush, which proceeds to lie down on the other side of him.
Convinced as he is that this is a test of his faith, he determines to return to his reading. As soon as he does so, the two lions pounce upon him and devour him.
Moral of the story: Don't read between the lions.
