Backbiting in Islam By Naseerah Nanabhai Backbiting is a sin very clearly distinguished by the shariah. The Messenger (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) asked the Sahabah, do you know what is backbiting. And they responded saying, Allah (SWT) and His Messenger know best. Mufti Yusuf Moosagie spoke on the topic. Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) then said, speaking about your brother or sister in a manner that he or she dislikes (that is backbiting). The Sahabah then asked, "O Nabi of Allah, what if my brother is the way that I am saying, if he possesses these qualities or did the action I'm referring to? Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) mentioned that if you speak about him that is backbiting and if he does not possess those qualities you have slandered him. Sajdah Shukar Question: Is Sajdah Shukar (prostration of gratitude) an established practice? Answer: When one attains a bounty or when one is saved from a calamity, then as a form a gratitude, it is best that one offers Two Rakaats of Salaah. If for whatever reason, one is not able to do that, then it is Mustahab (recommended) that one makes a Sajdah of Shukar.
