HOW EASILY WE FORGET

Current discourse around refugees, particularly within certain streams of the media gives rise to the “us” and “them mentality. The narrative is one of the refugees, regularly dehumanised and constantly portrayed in a negative light. In fact, the narrative today is that refugees are a primary example of people who are victims of the direst circumstances.

Casting our focus back to World War 2 will allow us to find several examples of Europeans fleeing to the Middle East seeking refuge. Hitler’s aggressive war machine, in 1941, had conquered much of Europe, leaving no safe haven for the millions of civilians. The British created the idea of settling hundreds of thousands of refugees, mainly women and children from Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Turkey and the former Yugoslavia in Egypt, Syria and Palestine. The program was called the Middle East Relief and Refugee Administration or MERRA. The same perilous journey across the Mediterranean made by the Middle Eastern and African citizens today was then made by European citizens, with the destination and arrival ports reversed. read more

WASHING THE BEARD IN WUDHU

Question: Is it necessary to wash the beard when making Wudhu?

Answer: If one has a dense beard, it will be necessary to wash only that part of the beard which is on the face.

As for the hair that is outside or exceeds the circumference of the face (the beard hair that suspends from the face) - it will be Sunnah to make Khilaal of that hair.

Furthermore, if one has a sparse beard i.e. the skin under the beard remain visible - then it will be necessary to wash the beard as well as the skin beneath the beard.

LEMON GARLIC CHICKEN RECIPE

Delightful chicken with garlic cloves, vinegar and pepper garnished with lemon, and basil.

Ingredients:
4 chicken Breast Halves (skinless and boneless)
2 Garlic Cloves (minced)
2 tblsp Lemone Juice
1 tsp Paprika
Salt and Pepper according to taste
2 tblsp Margarine or Butter
½ tsp Lemon Zest (grated)

How to make lemon garlic chicken:
Drizzle chicken with salt, paprika and pepper. In a skillet melt butter or margarine over medium-high heat. Combine chicken to skillet when pan becomes hot. Fry chicken on each side till it is slightly browned: it takes about 2-3minutes. Place the chicken on a baking sheet. Sprinkle half of the lemon juice over the chicken. Bake it in a preheated oven to 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Mix garlic to the hot pan and fry till it appears brown in color; it will take about 1to 2 minutes. Combine lemon zest to the pan after 2 minutes. Reduce by half, then cover it and set aside. Combine lemon juice over the chicken once again. Pour the remaining lemon juice over the chicken once again. Bake for another 5 minutes. Take it out. Place chicken over dish of rice. Spoon the sauce on it. Garnish with some lemon-twists, sage or basil.

OLD SUIT

My wife and I were at my high school reunion. As I looked around, I noticed the other men in their expensive suits with their bulging stomachs. Proud of the fact that I weighed just five pounds more than I did when I was in high school—the result of trying to beat a living out of a rocky hillside farm—I said to my wife, "I'm the only guy here who can wear the suit he graduated in." She glanced at the prosperous crowd. "You're the only one here who has to."
