A JOURNEY BEYOND OUR LIMITS

Most of us have received- at least once- that Power Point email which zooms us out in powers of 10 from the cell world of a tiny plant leaf... all the way out to the planets, stars and galaxies that make up what lies beyond our planet earth, in this breathtaking universe! Now instead of starting out with that small leaf, start the zoom out process with the image of yourself as you stand before Allah in Salah.

As you ponder over this image, think first of all of the physiological systems within your own body running in beautiful order to sustain you (blood system, immune system, nervous system, hormones, heart beats, respiration, firing neurons, skin cells, liver cells, spleen, kidneys, etc..). Move out now to what’s around you. The marvels of our plant world, the animal world, the seven seas, the insect world, the microbial world.

Further out to what surrounds you.. The miraculous precision of the planets and our sun- our solar system, our galaxy. Further out still to the infinite star constellations, nebulas, galaxies. Now what about the world of the unseen? The world of the angels, the jinn and whatever life that lies out there that we have not been able to reach. This may not be the end of it, but we have reached the limits of our knowledge, so start zooming back down. Back through all of that and back to where you were standing in prayer. Would you say you’re just a speck in Allah’s canvas above?

Nowhere even close... You are no longer even visible in relation to the magnificent size of Allah’s universe! And imagine, this is just our heaven. The Quran tells us there are 6 more! And Allah presides above all of that.

It is Sunnah Mu'akkadah to recite the entire Quran in the order that it is arranged in the Taraweeh Salaat in the month of Ramadaan. This should not be left out due to the laziness and negligence of the people. However, if there is the fear that by reciting the entire Quran the people will stop coming for Salaah, and there will be no Jama'at left, or that this will be extremely unpleasant for them; then it will be better to recite as much as they can bear. If they wish they could recite the ten Surahs from Surah al-Feel till the end. In each Rakaat one Surah should be recited. When ten rakaats are completed, the same ten Surahs should be recited in the next ten Rakaats. Alternatively, one could recite any other Surah which one desires.

CHOCOLATE CREAM AND MINT SWISS ROLL

(Makes 1 large cake)

INGREDIANTS
4 extra large eggs, separated. 125 ml castor sugar (105 g). 60 ml Snowflake self-raising flour (35 g). 60 ml cocoa powder (25 g). Castor sugar for rolling.

METHOD
Beat egg yolks and castor sugar until light and pale. Sift flour and cocoa powder and add to egg mixture, beating well. Beat egg whites until soft-peak stage and fold in with a metal spoon. Spread in a lined and greased 23 cm x 32 cm Swiss roll tin. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for 10 12 minutes. Remove from oven and leave to cool slightly. Turn out onto a clean, dry tea towel sprinkled well with castor sugar. Trim edges to ensure rolling without breaking. Remove paper carefully and roll it up with the sugared cloth. Leave it for about 5 minutes, then unroll and leave it to cool further.

For filling
Beat cream and sugar until thickened. Spread over the Swiss roll and sprinkle peppermint crisp over it. Roll up.

* The eighteenth time, he swears at his poverty.
* The nineteenth time, he counts his money carefully.
* The twentieth time he sees the ad, he buys what it is offering.
