SALAAH IS A GIFT Why does Allah offer us this gift? What benefit does prayer confer on a Muslim? Why is it that when one becomes a Believer, prescribed prayer is something that is never intentionally missed? We gain some insight by examining the situation that prevails in its absence. To pray means seeking an audience with The Almighty. As with all formal appearances, whether in a Court of Law, a Parliament, or before a King the person making the request must qualify to appear before the request is considered. What level of purity, love and piety would we need to qualify for an appearance before The Almighty? Most of us will not be eligible even if we spent our entire lives preparing. By granting this gift, or special invitation, the rules change. It is no longer we who are making the request, but Allah who is issuing the call. We are now His guests, and a host does not turn away anyone that is specifically invited. We now find that despite us being in the worst possible state, either physically, emotionally or spiritually, an audience with The Almighty is not only possible, but virtually guaranteed. This gift is extended to everyone, with only one condition – that we worship Allah exclusively. The Almighty does not favour anyone. Those who meet the criterion qualify. Visiting A Grave Question: What is the Islamic status of visiting the graveyard? Answer: It is Mustahab for men to visit graves/the grave yard. It is preferable to visit at least once a week. It is also preferable that this day be on a Friday. It is also permissible to undertake journeys to visit the graves of the pious. This is permissible as long as no belief or action contrary to the Shar’iah takes place. When It Rains, It Pours The unusually rainy winter we have had this year reminded me of a joke some of our relatives related a few years ago. It seems a lady moved from Phoenix to Seattle and when she arrived it was raining. While she moved in, it rained. The next day it rained... and the next. After several rainy days, while standing on her porch, she noticed a young boy on the porch of her neighbor's house. Trying not to sound too depressed, in a cheerful voice she called over to the lad, "Hi son, I'm your new neighbour." "Hi," the boy called back and waved. "Say, son, does it ever stop raining here?" she asked. With a look of consternation, the youngster replied, "Lady, how would I know? I'm only six years old!"
