THE DEER AND THE HUNTER

The Deer was once drinking from a pool and admiring the noble figure he made there. ‘Ah,’ said he, ‘where can you see such noble horns as these, with such antlers! I wish I had legs more worthy to bear such a noble crown; it is a pity they are so slim and slight.’ At that moment a Hunter approached and sent an arrow whistling after him. Away bounded the Deer, and soon, by the aid of his nimble legs, was nearly out of sight of the Hunter; but not noticing where he was going, he passed under some trees with branches growing low down in which his antlers were caught, so that the Hunter had time to come up. ‘Alas! alas!’ cried the Deer:

‘We often despise what is most useful to us.'

Sayyadina Alqamah Radhiyallahu anhu relates: "I asked Aayeshah Radhiyallahu anha: 'Did Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam fix a day for Ibaadah? She replied: 'The practices of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was of a continuous nature. Who among you have the strength, which Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam had?' " (TIRMIZI)

Commentary: That meant to set aside a day for some special devotion. It was certainly the practice of Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam that, whatever deed he began observing, he punctually continued its practice. You do not possess the strength and cannot fulfil these with such punctuality as that of Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam'. He punctually completed his prescribed practices. If for any reason it could not be fulfilled, he completed it at a later time.

* Pietermaritzburg High Court to rule on successor of Shembe Church - The KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg is expected to give judgment in a legal battle over the leadership of the Nazareth Baptist Church, popularly known as the Shembe church.

* ANCYL'S Moraka: Maine a liar  and a sell-out - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leadership has been involved in squabbles, with the league’s deputy secretary Thandi Moraka labelling president Collen Maine as a liar and a sellout and calling on him to step down.

CHOCOLATE CREAM AND MINT SWISS ROLL
(Makes 1 large cake)

Ingredients:
4 extra large eggs, separated. 125 ml castor sugar (105 g). 60 ml Snowflake self-raising flour (35 g). 60 ml cocoa powder (25 g). Castor sugar for rolling.

Method:
Beat egg yolks and castor sugar until light and pale. Sift flour and cocoa powder and add to egg mixture, beating well. Beat egg whites until soft-peak stage and fold in with a metal spoon. Spread in a lined and greased 23 cm x 32 cm Swiss roll tin. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for 10 12 minutes. Remove from oven and leave to cool slightly. Turn out onto a clean, dry tea towel sprinkled well with castor sugar. Trim edges to ensure rolling without breaking. Remove paper carefully and roll it up with the sugared cloth. Leave it for about 5 minutes, then unroll and leave it to cool further.

For filling
Beat cream and sugar until thickened. Spread over the Swiss roll and sprinkle peppermint crisp over it. Roll up.

LOCKED OUT

Being the office supervisor, I had to have a word with a new employee who never arrived at work on time. I explained that her tardiness was unacceptable and that other employees had noticed that she was walking in late every day. After listening to my complaints, she agreed that this was a problem and even offered a solution.
