THE MESSAGE |
WHAT MUST BE DONE ON ASHURA? (10th of Muharram)
- Fasting - The significance of the 10th of Muharram was such, that it was obligatory to fast on this day. The prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the companions would fast on this day before the obligation was abrogated by the fasts of Ramadan. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates in a Hadith: “Allah’s messenger ordered (the Muslims) to fast on the day of ‘Ashura, and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day (Ashura) or not. (Sahih Al Bukhari)
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) recommended the believers to fast on this day. It is the best fast after Ramadan. “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘The best of fasting after Ramadhan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram.” (Sahih Muslim)
A means of expiating sins - The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Fasting the day of ‘Arafah I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashura I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.” (Sahih Muslim)
We should try to fast on the 10th of Muharram and on the ninth too but we must remember that it is not obligatory though there are great virtues in doing so.
Imam Ash-Shafi’i (may Allah have mercy on him) has said, “It is Mustahabb to fast on both the ninth and tenth days, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted on the tenth, and intended to fast on the ninth.”
- Spending on one’s family on this day brings blessings. There are great blessings to be attained throughout the year for the one who is extra generous to his family: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “One who generously spends on his family on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), Allah will be generous on him for the entire year.” (Al-Bayhaqi, Shu’ab al-Iman)
In this regard, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (Allah have mercy on him) quotes Sufyan ibn Uyayna (Allah have mercy on him) as saying, “I have practiced this [spending on the family] for fifty or sixty years, and have found nothing but good in it.” (Lata’if al-Ma’arif)

SUNNAH BEFORE ESHA
Question: How many Rakaats should one read before the Fardh of Esha?
Answer: It is Mustahab to perform four Rakaats before the Fardh of Esha. [Quduri Page 99]
The four Rakaats are not mentioned specifically in a Hadith. Proof is taken from the Hadith
بين كل اذانين صلاة لمن شاء ( صحيح البخاري ج١ص١٧٤)
The Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said; “Between the Azaan and Iqamah there is a Salaah.”
Imam Abu Hanifa is of the opinion that “Salaah” in its complete form and quality is four Rakaats. [Munyatul Musalli Lil Halbi]

2/3 cup plain non-fat yogurt - 2 tablespoons low-fat mayonnaise - 2 ounces crumbled blue cheese - 3 tablespoons finely chopped green onions - 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper - 1 teaspoon vegetable oil - 1/2 pound skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into strips - 1/4 teaspoon salt - 2 teaspoons butter - 1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce.
Directions
To Make Dip: In a small bowl, whisk together the yogurt, mayonnaise and bleu cheese. Stir in green onion and pepper; cover and refrigerate.
To Make Strips: Heat oil in a large skillet. Season chicken with salt and sautee over medium high heat, stirring frequently, until lightly browned and cooked through, about 7 to 10 minutes.
