IBN RUSHD (AVERROES)

Abū 'l-Walīd Muammad ibn Amad ibn Rushd, better known as Ibn Rushd, and in European literature as Averroes (1126 - 1198), was an Andalusian Muslim polymath; a master of Islamic philosophy, Islamic theology, Maliki law and jurisprudence, logic, psychology, politics, Arabic sound theory, and the sciences of medicine, astronomy, geography, mathematics, physics and celestial mechanics. He was born in Córdoba, Al Andalus, modern-day Spain, and died in Marrakesh, modern-day Morocco. His school of philosophy is known as Averroism. He has been described by some as the founding father of secular thought in Western Europe and "one of the spiritual fathers of Europe," although other scholars oppose such claims.

His name is also seen as Averroës, Averroès or Averrhoës, indicating that the "o" and the "e" form separate syllables. Averroes is a Latinate distortion of the actual Arab name Ibn Rushd.

Ibn Rushd came from a family of Islamic legal scholars; his grandfather Abu Al-Walid Muhammad (d. 1126) was chief judge of Qurtabah (Córdoba) under the Almoravid dynasty. His father, Abu Al-Qasim Ahmad, held the same position until the coming of the Almohad dynasty in 1146. read more

Ingredients

750g (6 cups) cake flour
30ml (6 tsp) sugar
2.5ml (1/2 tsp) salt
5ml (1tsp) baking powder
10g (1 pkt) instant yeast
20ml fine cardamom
8ml (1½ level tsp) fine ginger
30ml (2 Tbsp) fine cinnamom
7.5ml (1½ tsp) naartjie peel
30 ml (2 Tbsp) aniseed
1 egg
15ml (1 Tbsp) oil
30ml (2 Tbsp) butter/margarine
375ml (1½ cup) boiling water
375ml (1½ cup) milk

Method
Mix flour with spices, sugar, yeast and salt. Melt butter in boiling water and mix milk. To dry ingredients add egg, oil and milk-water mixture. Mix thoroughly to form a soft dough. Leave to rise for about 2 hours. Once risen, moisten hands with oil and make small balls in the palm of hand. Set aside to rise again. Lightly stretch balls and deep fry in medium hot oil

"It's the frogs trilling for a mate," Patti, the naturalist, explained. "We have a pair in the science room. But since they've been together for so long, they no longer sing to each other."

The woman nodded sympathetically, "The trill is gone."
