PERSONALITY

AT-TUFAYL IBN AMR AL-DAWSI

At-Tufayl ibn Amr was the chief of the Daws tribe in pre-Quranic times and a distinguished Arab notable known for his manly virtues and good works.

He fed the hungry, comforted those in distress and granted asylum to refugees. He was also keenly interested in literature and was himself a sharp and sensitive poet capable of expressing the most delicate emotions.

Tufayl left the hearths of his village in Tihama in the south of the Arabian Peninsula and set out for Makkah. The struggle between the noble Prophet and the disbelieving Quraysh was already at its height. Each wanted to gain support for his cause and recruit helpers. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be on him, sought help from his Lord. His weapons were faith and truth. The disbelieving Quraysh resisted his message with every weapon, and attempted to keep people away from it by all the means at their disposal.

Tufayl found himself entering this battle without any preparation or warning. He did not come to Makkah to get involved in it. Indeed he was not aware of the struggle that was taking place.

Let Tufayl himself take up the story from this point: read more

RECIPE
Mutton and Vegetable Stew

30ml cooking oil
2 onions, thinly sliced
600g mutton or lamb, cubed
5 whole cloves
5 whole allspice
5ml salt (or to taste)
10ml crushed, dried red chilies
2, 5 ml grated nutmeg
10ml sugar
500 ml frozen mixed vegetables
150ml water

Method:
Heat oil in large saucepan and braise onions until golden, 5-10 minutes. Add well - washed and drained meat, cover and braise slowly for approximately 30 minutes or until meat is fairly tender. Add cloves, allspice, salt, chillies and nutmeg and cook, uncovered, over high heat for about 10 minutes or until meat has browned well, adding sugar to help the browning. Add frozen mixed vegetables and water and cook, covered, over moderate heat for about 15 minutes. Serve on a bed of white rice.

Variation:
Soak 125 ml sago in 250ml water for 15 minutes. Add to stew after adding frozen vegetables and cook, covered, over low heat until sago is transparent, about 15 minutes. Serve with Mashed potatoes.

POEM
IN THE PROPHET SALLALLAHU ALAYHI WA SALLAM’s MOSQUE

It is said:
"Words are a powerful tool"
But for me, words became powerless
in the Prophet's Mosque.

I'm awestruck by the sight,
The beautiful huge umbrellas high up in the sky, shielding us from the sun.
The architecture of the Prophet's Mosque inside out,
The glittering doors leading into the Mosque,
Every Muslim regardless of nationality standing shoulder to shoulder in prayer.

The serenity and atmosphere, peaceful and calm.
Not a star can be seen in the Prophet's Mosque,
"The STAR" lies silent under a magnificent green dome.
Awaiting salutations.
So near, yet so far.

THE SMILE

A FUNNY NEWS STORY

According to the bus driver, it was a brutal, unprovoked attack. A woman got on his bus and assaulted him with a half-eaten banana. “I had banana all over me,” he insisted. “On my tie, my shirt, and my eye.” The woman explained that the driver had almost hit her car and that when she entered the bus to rationally discuss the matter, the banana slipped … right into his tie, his shirt, his eye … The court may not have believed that, but it did believe her when she argued that it was “unreasonable that a banana could cause this much damage.” They slapped her with a fine of only about $100.
