When his friends opened up the Will it stated that the one friend should get 1/2 (half) of total camels while the second should be given 1/3rd (one-third) & the third friend should be given 1/9th (one-ninth) of the total camels.

As it was not possible to divide 17 x Camels into half or 17 by 3 or 17 by 9, the 3 x friends started to fight with each other. So, the 3 x friends decided to go to a wise man.

The wise man read the Will patiently & after giving it due thought, brought 1 x camel of his own & added the same to x 17.

That increased the total to 18 x camels.

Now, he began dividing the deceased father’s animals.

.Half of 18 = 9. So he gave the first friend 9 x Camels.
.1/3rd of 18 = 6. So he gave the second friend 6 x Camels
.1/9th of 18 = 2. So he gave the third friend 2 x Camels.

Now add this up: 9 plus 6 plus 2 is 17 & this leaves one camel, which the wise man took back!

Moral: The attitude of negotiation & problem solving is to find the 18th camel ie: the common ground. Once a person is able to find the 18th camel the issue is resolved.

It is difficult at times.
However, to reach a solution, the first step is to believe that there is a solution.

If we think that there is no solution, we won’t be able to reach any!

Commentary: The Sufis name this Salaah as Salaatuz Zawaal, and this is included in the Mustahab prayers. According to the majority of the Muhadditheen this is the four Sunnats of Zuhr Salaah. The reason being, besides the Sunan of Zuhr, there is no other Nafl prayer after Zawaal (midday) that Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam performed regularly.
