HADITH
(Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam)

Narrated Abu Huraira (RA): Abu Hassan said to Abu Huraira: My two children had died. Would you narrate to me anything from Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) a Hadith which would soothe our hearts in our bereavements? He said: Yes. Small children are the birds of Paradise. If one of them meets his father (or he said his parents) he would take hold of his cloth, or he said with his hand as I take hold of the hem of your cloth (with my hand). And he (the child) would not take off (his hand) from it until Allah causes his father to enter Paradise. This Hadith has been narrated on the authority of Tamim with the same chain of transmitters. And he is reported to have said: Did you hear from Allah’s Apostle (peace be upon him) anything which may soothe our heart in our bereavements? He said: Yes.

RECIPE
VEGETABLE CURRY

Serves 4
My vegetarian friends always ask me to make this curry, but I make extra because it’s not only the vegetarians who tuck in!

Ingredients
15 ml oil - 2 medium onions, chopped - 1 large green pepper, chopped - 1 large brinjal, cubed - 8 courgettes, sliced - 250 g button mushrooms, sliced - 5 ml crushed garlic - 5 ml ground coriander - 5 ml ground cumin - 2 ml turmeric - 1 chilli, chopped - 2 ml chilli powder - 30 g freshly chopped coriander.

Method
Heat oil in a large sauce pan; add onions and green pepper and sauté for a minute. Add remaining ingredients. Cover and simmer over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally until cooked. Season to taste and stir in fresh coriander. Serve with basmati rice.

Telephone solicitors are one of my father's pet peeves. He is especially annoyed by those who offer "free gifts" as part of their sales pitch. Late one night, Dad was in bed when the phone rang.

The voice on the end of the line said: "Congratulations, you've just won a free burial plot!"

"Great!" Dad replied. "Send it over." Then he hung up.
