MUSLIM WOMEN REPUDIATE TYPIFICATION

By Ummi Abdillah - Radio Islam Programming

There is only one thing worse than sensationalist trends amidst Western media wanting to save brown women from brown men: Muslim women having to prove they’re human! If it wasn’t enough that Muslim women make the news largely to feed the propaganda machine against Islam, i.e. honour killings, genital mutilation and burqa abuse, Muslim women now face media scrutiny to prove they enjoy human activities, among them marital relations. An article featured on Jezebel, which is a feminist blog aimed at women's interests faced the repugnant ire of Muslim women earlier this month when they published what many deemed reductive Islamaphobia viz. “horny Muslim women.” This reductive Islamophobia - “normalising the Muslim” trend also caused TLC, an American cable TV channel owned by Discovery Communications to cancel a show on Muslims – “because it made Muslims seem too normal.”

To typify and caricaturise, first Muslim men (bearded ‘jihadists’ and their seventy virgins in Paradise) and Muslim women (exotic, submissive sex slaves) says more about the hypersexual Orientalist than anything else. It does however provide the platform to highlight three more issues. The first among them, the obvious amongst us Muslims: sexuality is a normal part of our faith. In recent years there is an increasingly positive trend among Muslim therapists and Islamic scholars to promote sexual health, not merely as the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity, but physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. While Islamic societies may go to great lengths to make sure all things sex-related remain out of the public eye, sexual relations between a married man and woman is deemed an act of worship, even if not for the purpose of procreation. This outward or external bashfulness, if it could be called that, is part of the self-theophany within every Muslim under the umbrella of Hayaa.

The second issue is that there is no honour or prestige entitled to one who opts for (non) marriage or perpetual celibacy as a form of worship in Islam. A monastic existence has only been encouraged in dire circumstances. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): “By Allah, I am the one among you with the most fear and awareness of Allah, yet I fast and break the fast for days, I pray and I sleep a part of the night, and I marry women. Whoever disdains my way is not of my creed.” (Al-Bukhari) read more

OUR LATEST PODCAST
Youth and Drugs - Heart To Heart by Ml Dawud Samson - Part 1 of 2

Ml Dawud Samson, who hails from Cape Town, dedicates much of his time with the youth and addressing their challenges. Moulana mentioned that, of all the many pressures kids between the ages of 12 and 17 years encounter, drugs is the most common and most difficult. Adult’s preoccupation with personal ambition too compounds the problem.

It’s imperative and vital for parents to know their teens, know their friends and know their environments. Today, there is not a family that is not affected by drug abuse. Whether lower class, middle class or higher class, this scourge does not discriminate.

As mentioned by Moulana Dawud in this podcast, there are five possible reasons people resort to drugs: to feel grown-up; to fit in and belong; to relax and feel good; to take risks; and to rebel and satisfy curiosity.

Moulana advised the youth with the words of Allah The Most Kind:

`Spend in the Path (obedience) of Allah (in worship and striving) and do not throw your own hands (do not lead yourselves) into destruction. Do good, for Allah certainly loves those who do good.’ (Ch2-Vs195)

Ya Shabaab Al Ghad, Oh youth of tomorrow, do not destroy yourself…

RECIPE
CHICKEN AND CORN TRIANGLES

3 Tablespoons ghee or oil - 1 onion sliced - 1 teaspoon whole jeeroo - 2 ½ cups chicken fillet, cubed - pounded green and garlic, to taste - 1 teaspoon salt - ½ teaspoon fine black pepper - ½ cup crushed vermicelli - ½ cup water - 215 g can cream style sweetcorn - ¼ cup flour - 8 tablespoons water.

Heat the ghee in a pot together with the corn onion and jeeroo. Stir over heat until onions are soft. Add the chicken, chillies, garlic, salt and pepper. Cook until tender. Stir in the Vermicelli and water. Continue to cook until mixture thickens. Remove from heat and add the sweet corn. Allow to cool.

Stir the flour and water together in a bowl until a smooth paste is formed. Set aside. If using phyllo pastry, cut into 7cm strips. Place a level teaspoon of mixture at the one end of each strip. Brush the end with the flour before sealing. Deep fry in moderately hot oil until lightly browned. Serve with lemon.

WEBLINKS
THE SMILE

An Old man went to the doctor complaining of a terrible pain in his leg. “I am afraid it’s just old age”, replied the doctor, “there is nothing we can do about it.” “That can’t be” fumed the old man, “you don’t know what you are doing.” “How can you possibly know I am wrong?” countered the doctor. “Well it’s quite obvious,” the old man replied, “my other leg is fine, and it’s the exact same age!”
