FOOD WASTE

Ramadhaan Mubaarak! I hope the fast is going well.

One emphasis that we should try to make is not to waste food. Firstly, wasting food is a sin. Secondly, consider all the resources that have gone into producing the food: From where it was grown (the farm did steal the home of a bunny after all!) to your table. The water, energy, petrol, packaging and effort in preparation... all to go into occupy space in a smelly, bad-for-the-environment landfill on the outskirts of YOUR town!

So things to keep in mind:

• Try to estimate properly. I know we always like to make more than less, but just try to think twice before frying another six Samoosas.
• Share the bounties of Iftaar goodies with your visiting friends and family and send them off with ‘barakatjies’( Barakatjies – like a doggy bag, but with more panache).
• Or eat them for Sehri the next day.
• Pack them for a non-fasting kid for school lunch (less preparation for you in the morning).
• And better yet, plate it up beautifully and distribute it to needy people at the Masjid or on the way to the work etc.

Just try to be green with the correct intention and may Allah reward us for caring for the resources that he has granted us.

Think Deen, think Green, think Green Deen! :)
