NEVER LOSE HOPE IN DUAA

One of the common complaints of many of us Muslims is that when we make Dua, we don't see its immediate effects. As a result, we get disheartened and lose hope in the effectiveness and powers of our Duaa. There may be an interest to be served by delay, and haste may be harmful.

Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam has said: "A person will be fine so long as he does not become impatient and says, I prayed but I did not receive any answer.'"

The response may be withheld because of some fault in you. Perhaps there was something dubious in what you ate or your heart was heedless at the time when you made the Duaa, or your punishment is being decreased by means of your need being withheld, because of some sin from which you have not repented sincerely. So look for some of these reasons, so that you might achieve your aim.

You should examine the intention behind this request, because attaining it may lead to more sin, or prevent you from doing some good, so withholding it is better. Perhaps losing what you have missed out on will cause you to turn to Allah and getting it will distract you from Him. This is obvious, based on the fact that were it not for this calamity you would not have turned to Him, because the real calamity is what distracts you from Him, but what makes you stand before Him is good for you and is in your best interests.

If you ponder over these things you will focus on what is more beneficial for you, such as correcting a mistake or seeking forgiveness or standing before Allah and beseeching Him, and forget about what you have missed out on.

It was narrated that Faddalah ibn Ubayd said: Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam heard a man making Duaa after his prayer, but he did not send blessings upon Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam. Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: "This man is in a hurry." He then called him and said to him or to someone else: "When any one of you has finished praying (and makes dua), let him start by praising Allah, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), then after that let him ask for whatever he wants." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 2765.)

Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam said: "The slave will receive a response so long as his Duaa does not involve sin or severing of family ties, and so long as he is not hasty."It was said, "What does being hasty mean?" Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam said: "When he says, ‘I made Duaa and I made Duaa, and I have not seen any response,' he gets frustrated and stops making Duaa." (Bukahari, 6340; Muslim, 2735)

Finally, for those of us who have abandoned the practice of Duaa, we may be missing something quite important. Wishing is not the same thing as making a Duaa. We may keep wishing our wishes but we have a better chance of seeing them materialized when we actually make the effort to enter the state of Duaa and ask Allah Ta'aalawhat we want.

A Dialogue between a Scholar and an Alcoholic

Alcoholic: Do you think I am doing wrong by eating a date?
Scholar: No.

Alcoholic: And if I ate with it some grass?
Scholar: There is nothing wrong with that.

Alcoholic: And if I were to wash them down with water?
Scholar: Drink and enjoy.

Alcoholic: Since all of that is permissible, then why do you forbid us from alcohol, which consists of the above-mentioned ingredients?
Scholar: If I poured water on top of you, would that hurt you?

Alcoholic: No it would not.
Scholar: And if I were to sprinkle some dirt in that, would you be hurt?

Alcoholic: That would not harm me.
Scholar: But if I were to mix it water and dirt together and trough a process make a large brick from those two elements, and then were I to throw that large brick at you, would you be hurt?

Alcoholic: That would kill me!
Scholar: The same goes for Alcohol.

'O you who believe, Intoxicants, and Gambling, and the altars of Idols, and the Games of chance are Abominations of Shaytaan; you shall avoid them, that you may succeed.' (Quran Surah 'Maai'dah' 5:90)

It was reported by Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that Nabi Sallallahu alaihi Wa Sallam said: "Allah's curse falls on ten groups of people who deal with alcohol.

(1) The one who distills it,
(2) the one for whom it has been distilled,
(3) the one who drinks it,
(4) the one who transports it,
(5) the one to who it has been brought,
(6) the one who serves it,
(7) the one who sells it,
(8) the one who utilizes money from it,
(9) the one who buys it and
(10) the one who buys it for someone else." (Sunan Ibn-I-Majah Volume #3, Book of Intoxicants, Chapter 30 Hadith # 3380)
