Aishah Radhiyaallahu Ta’ala anha reported that the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam Used to perform I’tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah the Mighty and Majestic, took away his life, then his wives followed this practice after him. (Bukhari, Muslim)

COMMENTARY: I’tikaaf is to sit in seclusion for the last ten days of Ramadhaan. This is done in search of the Laylatul Qadr (a blessed night in virtue, ‘the night of Power’).

CINNAMON AND NUT CAKE

Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Baking Time: 30 – 40 minutes
Serves 8 – 10

125g (125 ml) butter - 250 ml (1 cup) sugar - 2 eggs - 5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla essence - 500 ml (2 cups) flour - 5 ml (1 tsp) baking powder - 3 ml (½ tsp) bicarbonate of soda - 1 ml (¼ tsp) salt - 1 can (290 g) Nestlé Dessert Cream, soured with 30 ml (2 Tbsp) lemon juice - 125 ml (½ cup) chopped pecan nuts - 125 ml ( ½ cup) sugar - 15 ml (1 Tbsp) cinnamon.

1. Preheat oven to 180° C. Grease and line a 23 cm square cake pan.
2. Cream the butter and sugar together.
3. Add the eggs and vanilla. Beat well.
4. Sift dry ingredients together and add alternatively to batter with soured cream.
5. Mix pecan nuts, sugar and cinnamon together.
6. Pour half the batter into the prepared cake pan. Sprinkle with half the cinnamon mixture, then pour remaining batter over. Sprinkle with the rest of the cinnamon mixture.
7. Bake for 30 – 40 minutes. Allow to cool, then cut into squares to serve.

Preparation Time: 45 minutes.
Setting Time: 2 – 3 hours

REFORMED PRISONER

Several years ago, Mike was sentenced to prison. During his stay, he got along well with the guards and all his fellow inmates. The warden saw that deep down, Mike was a good person and made arrangements for Mike to learn a trade while doing his time. After three years, Mike was recognized as one of the best carpenters in the local area. Often he would be given a weekend pass to do odd jobs for the citizens of the community, and he always reported back to prison before Sunday night was over.

The warden was thinking of remodelling his kitchen and in fact had done much of the work himself. But he lacked the skills to build a set of kitchen cupboards and a large countertop which he had promised his wife. So he called Mike into his office and asked him to complete the job for him.

But, alas, Mike refused. He told the warden, "Gosh, I'd really like to help you but counter fitting is what got me into prison in the first place".
