It is the divine system of Allah Ta’aala that He has afforded special virtue and significance to some things over others. From mankind, the Ambiyaa Alaihis Salaam have been blessed with distinguished positions and elevated statuses over others. From the different places in the world, the Haramain (Makkah Mukarramah and Madinah Munawwarah) have been accorded a special rank over the rest of the world. From the twelve months of the Islamic calendar, special sanctity and sacredness has been given to four specific months i.e. Zul-Qa’dah, Zul-Hijjah, Muharram and Rajab.

By the same token, amongst the days of the Islamic year the day of Aashura has been blessed with exclusive virtue and immense blessings.

It is reported from Abu Qataadah (Radiyallahu Anhu) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: “On account of observing the fast of Aashura, I have hope that Allah Ta’aala will expiate the sins of the past year.” (Ibnu Maajah 1/124, Saheeh Muslim 1/368)

The month of Muharram and the day of Aashura

Reward for fasting an entire month

It is reported from Ibnu Abbaas (Radiyallahu Anhuma) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “The one who observes the fast of the day of Arafah two years of his sins will be forgiven and the one who fasts during the month of Muharram, for each day he fasts he will receive the reward of fasting for an entire month.” (At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb, vol. 2, p. 46)

It is an exclusive virtue of the month of Muharram that each fast in this auspicious month is equivalent in reward to fasting for an entire month. No other month has been blessed with this virtue.

The greatness and virtue of Aashura

While the month of Shawwaal, Zul-Qa’dah and Zul-Hijjah have been divinely selected to accommodate the rituals of Haj and sacrifice, the month of Muharram is the month that enjoys the honour of being the month of Allah Ta’aala and of accommodating the fast of Aashura, which expiates the sins of the past year. The immense virtues and abundant blessings that this day holds could be somewhat understood through the desire and eagerness that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) expressed to meet this day.

Hazrat Ibnu Abbaas (Radiyallahu Anhuma) reports: “I did not see Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) anxiously await the fast of any virtuous day more than the day of Aashura.” (Saheeh Bukhari 1/268)

It is reported from Abu Hurairah (Radiyallahu Anhu) that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: “The best of fasts after the month of Ramadhaan is fasting in the month of Allah, which is Muharram, and the best of Salaahs after the faraaidh (obligatory Salaah) is the Tahajjud Salaah.” (Saheeh Muslim 1/368)

TAUBAH (Seeking Forgiveness)

While many Ahadeeth makes mention of a person's sins being forgiven as a rsult of various good deeds, we should keep in mind that major sins requires sincere Taubah. Seeking forgiveness is obligatory for every sin. In the case where the sin commited by a person relates to Allah only without involving any other person .eg. listening to music, being negligent of Salaah, then there are three conditions to be fulfilled for the acceptance of the Taubah.

1) He should refrain from commiting more sins with immediate effect.
2) He should feel ashamed at what he has done.If takes pride in informing his friends that i done this on over the weekend etc., then this is a sign that he does not regret his sin.
3) He should make a firm, sincere intention not to indulge in such sins repeatedly.

The repentance of the remorseful person will remain imperfect if one of the above three is not present.

In the case where the sin commited by a person involves another person e.g. gossiping, stealing; the theologians have imposed one more condition in addition to the above three...

4) A person should free himself from that person with regards to the sin. If he has stolen, he should return the property to its rightful owner. If he has indulged in back-biting, he should seek forgiveness from that person.

28/11/11-Israel's defence ministry apologised for the treatment of a pregnant American news photographer who said she was strip searched and humiliated by Israeli soldiers during a security check. Lynsey Addario, who was on assignment for the New York Times, had requested that she not be forced to go through an X-ray machine as she entered Israel from the Gaza Strip because of concerns for her unborn baby. Instead, she wrote in a letter to the ministry, she was forced through the machine three times as soldiers "watched and laughed from above". 500g vegetables of your choice – patti pans, sweet potatoes, gem squash, pumpkin, baby potatoes, carrots, marrow
1 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp lemon pepper
1 Tbsp garlic butter salt to taste
Salt to taste
½ cup fresh cream

Method:
Wash veggies and cut those that are big or whole into chunks. Leave sweet potatoes, baby potatoes, gem squash and marrow unpeeled. Place veggies in an ovenproof casserole Mix together rest of the ingredients and pour over the vegetables Cover casserole with foil and bake at 180*C for 15 to 20 minutes, then remove foil and bake uncovered for a further 10 to 15 minutes or until all the veggies are very tender.
