There was once a deer that was very thirsty. Suddenly, she spotted a puddle of water in a deep ditch. Being thirsty, she jumped into the water. However, she then realised that she could not climb out.
A fox happened to pass by and realising what had happened. He remarked, 'My dear friend! You were wrong in your judgement, as you did not foresee your being able to get out of the ditch before you jumped into the ditch.'
Some of the lessons learnt from this story are:
1. When a person is desperate he will do anything to acquire that thing. He may lose his respect, identity, even his religion, to acquire his objective. This is why we should always ask Allah for guidance and ask Him to keep us steadfast on the Straight Path. Otherwise, some mistakes can be life-threatening.
2. Before starting something new in life, for example, starting a new hobby, or making a new friend, always think of a 'way out', just in case it does not work out. Some people make bitter enemies with a person, only to find out later that they have to acquire some important advice from that very same person.
Commentary: This is not an exaggeration, or something to do with faith. The one with whom Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam shook hands, a fragrance emitted from that hand for a whole day. It is a proven fact that by committing excess evil the body gives off a disgraceful smell. Sayyidina Rasulullah Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam not uttering even the word 'Oof' on anything is due to his high and noble character and humbleness.
He did not regard Sayyidina Anas Radiyallahu 'Anhu fulfilling or not fulfilling a duty to be something from Sayyidina Anas Radyallahu 'Anhu's own side, but something that is from Allah, and was always contented with it.

Ingredients:
500g dates
10ml (2 tsp) bi-carbonate of soda
500ml (2 cups) boiling water
375g butter
500ml (2 cups) brown sugar (trea-cle)
10ml (2 tsp) vanilla essence
4 eggs
250g (2 cups) cake flour
1250g (2 cups) self raising flour
10ml (2tsp) baking powder
Pinch of salt
125ml (1/2 cup) walnuts
Method:
Place dates in a bowl and add the bicarbonate of soda. Cover dates with
2 cups of boiling water and allow cooling. In a separate bowl cream butter,
sugar, vanilla essence and slightly beaten eggs. Add flours, salt and
baking powder to creamed mixture and blend thoroughly. Lastly add dates
(with water) and nuts mix thoroughly. Pour batter into two lined, greased
loaf pans and bake for 1 1/2 hours at 300f/150c until skewer inserted
comes out clean.
