Imâm al-Wâqidî RA

The author of the history book 'futooh ush shaam', al-Imâm Abû ‘Abdillâh Muhammad bin ‘Umar al-Wâqidî al-Madanî. He was born at the beginning of 130 Hijrî in al-Madînah al-Munawwarah. His surname is derived from his grandfather’s name, Wâqid, and thus he became famous as al-Imâm al-Wâqidi.

He began his studies in Madînah. Amongst his prominent teachers were Ibn Abi Thahab Ma‘mar bin Râshid, al-Imâm Mâlik bin Anas and al-Imâm Sufyân ath-Thawrî. Initially he earned a living as a wheat trader, but when a calamity struck he migrated to Irâq in 180 Hijrî during the reign of Mamûn ar-Rashîd. There Yahyâ al-Barmakî welcomed him due to his great learning and he was included as one of Mamûn’s elite. He was soon appointed as judge and held this post until his death on 11 Thul Hijjah 207 Hijrî. He is buried in the graveyard of Khayzarân.

The Imâm was both a Muhaddith and Historian but since he concentrated on History, his Hadîth narrations need to be scrutinised before acceptance whereas he is doubtlessly acknowledged as a master of History. Besides Futûhushâm, al-Imâm al-Wâqidî also wrote:

• Tarîkh al-Fuqahâ (History of the Jurists)
• Kitâb al-Jamal (Battle of the Camel)
• Kitâb as-Siffîn (Battle of Siffîn)
• Maqtal al-Husayn (Massacre of Al-Husayn)
• Tafsîr al-Qurân etc.

Leaders from some of the world's most influential and energy-rich emerging nations are meeting in Beijing for the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) talks.

The US senate finance committee has voted to approve a healthcare package, boosting attempts by Barack Obama, the US president, to overhaul the present system.

RECIPE

Cottage Pie

1 onion sliced or chopped
2 Tbsp ghee
1 kg steak cubes
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper
1 Tbsp red masala
½ tsp arad
1 green pepper chopped
1 cup frozen peas
3 tomatoes grated
8 potatoes (mashed and seasoned)
Blobs of butter

Optional Extras
Boiled eggs
Onions
Tomatoes
Green peppers
Salt and pepper
Lots of cheddar cheese

Method:
Braise the onion in the ghee add the steak cubes. Add salt, pepper and cook until almost done. Add the red masala, arad, green peppers and frozen peas simmer. Add the tomatoes and cook till done. Must be saucy. Place this mixture at the bottom of a greases oblong pyrex dish. Spread a layer of mashed potato over the top. Add sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with cheese and cover with another layer of mashed potato. Sprinkle again with more cheese, top with blobs of butter and bake at 180C for +- 30 minutes. Serve hot.

FIQH

At fajr time, it is Sunnah to offer two Rakaats of Salaah before the Fard Salaah. These two Rakaats have been emphasized greatly in the Hadith and should not be left out at any time. If on some day, it gets extremely late and very little time is left for the Salaah, then at such a time of necessity; one should only offer the two Rakaats of Fard Salaat. However, when the sun rises considerably, then one should make Qada of the two Rakaats of Sunnah.
