Brought up in Basra, he met many Companions of the Prophet Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam including, it is said, seventy of those who fought at the Battle of Badr. He grew up to become one of the most prominent figures of his generation, being famous for his uncompromising piety and outspoken condemnation of worldliness in high places.

Whilst the Mo’tazelite theologians claim him as the founder of their movement (and ‘Amr ibn ‘Obaid and Wasel ibn ‘Ata’ are counted amongst his pupils), in Sufi hagiography he is revered as one of the greatest saints of early Islam. He died at Basra in 110 (728). Many of his speeches—he was a brilliant orator—and sayings are quoted by Arab authors and not a few of his letters have been preserved.

Sago & Fruit Cocktail

Ingredients:
110g sago
1 ltr milk
1 tin condensed milk
1 tin dessert cream
1 tsp china grass powder
2 tsp custard powder
25ml fruit cocktail
250ml fresh cream (optional)

Method:
Place sago in a bowl and cover sago with water. Mix custard with water to dissolve In a separate cup mix china grass powder with water to dissolve. Pour milk in medium size pot and bring to boil Add sago custard and china grass mixtures to boiled milk and stir until mixture thickens. Remove from heat. Stir in condensed milk then dessert cream. Pour mixture into a bowl and stir +- half of the fruit cocktail Decorate pudding with whipped fresh cream and remaining fruit cocktail.

At Zuhr time, one should first offer four Rakaats of Sunnah, then the four Rakaats of Fard and again two Rakaats of Sunnah. These six Rakaats of Sunnah are also necessary. There is great importance in offering them and it is a great sin to leave them without any valid reason.
