PERSONALITY

ABD AL-MALIK IBN QURAIB AL-ASMAI
(740 - 828 C.E.)

Al-Asmai was a philologist who made important contributions to Zoology, Botany, and Animal Husbandry.

‘Abd al-Malik ibn al-Quraib al-Asmai was born in Basrah in 740 C.E. He was a pious Arab and a good student of Arabic poetry. Al-Asmai is considered as the first Muslim scientist who contributed to Zoology, Botany and Animal Husbandry. His famous writings include Kitab al-Ibil, Kitab al-Khalil, Kitab al-Wuhush, Kitab al-Sha, and Kitab Khalq al-Insan. The last book on human anatomy demonstrates his considerable knowledge and expertise on the subject. Al-Asmai died in 828 C.E.

Interest in breeding of horses and camels was responsible for systematic scientific work by the Arabs as early as the seventh century. During the Umayyad Caliphate, behaviour and classification of animals and plants were studied and recorded by several scientists. Al-Asmai's work was very popular among scientists of the ninth and tenth century.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised its pandemic alert for swine flu by one level, just two steps short of declaring a full-scale pandemic.

The Sri Lankan military has ordered its troops to end the use of heavy weaponry and aerial bombardment in their fight against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Thousands of people are flooding out of Lower Dir as the Pakistan army takes on Taliban fighters in the district.

RECIPE

Laapse With Carrots and Vermicelli
--------------------------------
INGREDIENTS
2 cups crushed Laapse - 2 Cups extra fine vermicelli - 3 cups grated carrots - 1 cup ghee.

Method
Braise the Laapse in ½ cup ghee until it turns light pink. Add the carrots and braise for 5 - 10 minutes. Then add 2 cups of water and close the lid. Allow to simmer until the Laapse is completely done. Braise the vermicelli in the rest of the ghee until it is pink. Add 1 cup of water and allow to simmer gently until done. Add the vermicelli to the lapse mixture. Than add ½ cup of milk and simmer until completely dry.

Add
3 cups sugar - ½ tin condensed milk - 1 Tbsp fine elachi.

Simmer gently until all the moisture evaporates. More sugar may be added if desired. Add chopped baddam, pista and fine coconut. It should about ½ a cup altogether. Serve with Nestle cream and freshly grated coconut.

HANDY HINT

Baby Food Stains - Saturate stain with white vinegar, then wash as usual.

FIQH

It is Makruh-Tanzihi (undesirable) for the Imam (leader of congregation) to stand alone unnecessarily on an elevated place which is equal to or higher than one arm's length. But if there are a few Muqtadis (followers) with the Imam, it will not be Makruh (undesirable). And if there is only one Muqtadi (follower) with the Imam, it will be Makruh (undesirable).

Some scholars have said that if it is less than one arm's length and the Imam is distinguishable merely by glancing at him, it will also be Makruh (undesirable).

A THOUGHT

NATURE

When nature is subject to some condition, the condition is created to accept that nature. Then that nature can be acquired from the strength of fate and Allah-given gift. When nature has not uniformity owing to the cause of condition, so also there is uniformity for occurrence of an event owing to the action of Allah. Man should necessarily be fit for occurrence of this uniformity.

Allah says: I have created everything according to a measure. With regard to the original fate, there is this verse: 'My order is not but in a twinkling of an eye.' Man is subject to his fate. Owing to the fate or pre-measurement.

THE SMILE

Who is King of the Jungle?

A lion woke up one morning feeling really rowdy and mean. He went out and cornered a small monkey and roared, "Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?"
The trembling monkey says, "You are, mighty lion!
Later, the lion confronts an ox and fiercely bellows, "Who is the mightiest of all jungle animals?"
The terrified ox stammers, "Oh great lion, you are the mightiest animal in the jungle!"

On a roll now, the lion swaggers up to an elephant and roars, "Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?"

Fast as lightning, the elephant snatches up the lion with his trunk, slams him against a tree half a dozen times leaving the lion feeling like it'd been run over by a safari wagon. The elephant then stomps on the lion till it looks like a corn tortilla and ambles away.

The lion lets out a moan of pain, lifts his head weakly and hollers after the elephant -
"Just because you don't know the answer, you don't have to get so upset about it!"
