GOOD ACTIONS
----------------
About good actions, Abu Bakr RA said: "Good actions are a guard against the blows of adversity. Be good to others, that will protect you against evil. If you expect the blessings of Allah, be good to His people. Every day, nay every moment, try to do some good deed.

PERSONALITY
ABU HAMID AL-GHAZALI
(1058-1128 AD)
---------------
Abu Hamid Ibn Muhammad Ibn Muhammad al-Tusi al-Shafi'i al-Ghazali was born in 1058 AD in Khorasan, Iran. His father died while he was still very young but he had the opportunity of getting education in the prevalent curriculum at Nishapur and Baghdad. Soon he acquired a high standard of scholarship in religion and philosophy and was honoured by his appointment as a Professor at the Nizamiyah University of Baghdad, which was recognised as one of the most reputed institutions of learning in the golden era of Muslim history.

After a few years, however, he gave up his academic pursuits and worldly interests and became a wandering ascetic. This was a process (period) of mystical transformation. Later, he resumed his teaching duties, but again left these. An era of solitary life, devoted to contemplation and writing then ensued, which led to the author - ship of a number of everlasting books. He died in 1128 A.D. at Baghdad.

Ghazali's major contribution lies in religion, philosophy and Sufism. A number of Muslim philosophers had been following and developing several viewpoints of Greek philosophy, including the Neoplatonic philosophy, and this was leading to conflict with several Islamic teachings. On the other hand, the movement of Sufism was assuming such excessive proportions as to avoid observance of obligatory prayers and duties of Islam. Based on his unquestionable scholarship and personal mystical experience, Ghazali sought to rectify these trends, both in philosophy and Sufism.

In philosophy, Ghazali upheld the approach of mathematics and exact sciences as essentially correct. However, he adopted the techniques of Aristotelian logic and the Neoplatonic procedures and employed these very tools to lay bare the flaws and lacunas of the then prevalent Neoplatonic philosophy and to diminish the negative influences of Aristotelianism and excessive rationalism. In contrast to some of the Muslim philosophers, e.g., Farabi, he portrayed the inability of reason to comprehend the absolute and the infinite. Reason could not transcend the finite and was limited to the observation of the relative. Also, several Muslim philosophers had held that the universe was finite in space but infinite in time. Ghazali argued that an infinite time was related to an infinite space.

With his clarity of thought and force of argument, he was able to create a balance between religion and reason, and identified their respective spheres as being the infinite and the finite, respectively. In religion, particularly mysticism, he cleansed the approach of Sufism of its excesses and re-established the authority of the orthodox religion. Yet, he stressed the importance of genuine Sufism, which he maintained was the path to attain the absolute truth.

He was a prolific writer. His immortal books include Tuhafut al-Falasifa (The Incoherence of the Philosophers), Ihya al-'Ulum al-Islamia (The Revival of the Religious Sciences), "The Beginning of Guidance and his Autobiography", "Deliverance from Error". Some of his works were translated into European languages in the Middle Ages. He also wrote a summary of astronomy.

Ghazali's influence was deep and everlasting. He is one of the greatest theologians of Islam. His theological doctrines penetrated Europe, influenced Jewish and Christian Scholasticism and several of his arguments seem to have been adopted by St. Thomas Aquinas in order to similarly re-establish the authority of orthodox Christian religion in the West. So forceful was his argument in the favour of religion that he was accused of damaging the cause of philosophy and, in the Muslim Spain, Ibn Rushd (Averros) wrote a rejoinder to his Tuhafut.

NEWS

Financial markets have taken a beating after the US House of Representatives rejected a $700bn bail-out plan of the country's financial sector in a shock decision that sent US markets reeling. Share prices in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Australia all fell sharply on Tuesday before regaining some ground.

US helicopters and warships are circling a hijacked Ukrainian cargo ship loaded with 33 Soviet-designed tanks and other weapons that officials fear could wind up in the hands of al-Qaeda-linked fighters in Somalia, if the pirates are allowed to escape.

Pilgrims die in India stampede. More than 100 people have been killed and dozens more injured in a stampede at a Hindu temple in India's western state of Rajasthan. The incident occurred at the Chamunda temple near the historic town of Jodhpur where more than 25,000 people had gathered at the start of a major Hindu festival.

Police are in high numbers after this morning’s spurt of aggressive protests in Marlboro, North of Johannesburg. People who have taken up residents in the factories are apparently fed up with their living conditions and want to move into their RDP flats that the council have promised them.

Johannesburg metro police arrested a suspected hijack kingpin in Soweto at the weekend that has been linked to 19 hijackings and armed robberies. JMPD says that two other men were also arrested while four stolen vehicles and two shotguns were recovered.

SUNNAH of EID
---------------
Bathing, perfume and best clothes
Imam Ibn Qudamah said, “It is preferred to purify oneself by bathing for Eid. Ibn Umar used to bathe on the day of Fitr. This is also reported upon Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (Al-Mughnee, 2/370)

Ibn Al-Qayyim said, “He (peace be upon him) would wear his best clothes when proceeding to the two Eids and the day of jum ‘ah.” (Zaad-ul-Ma’aad, 1/441)

Eating before prayer
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Messenger of Allah would not set out in the morning of Eid-Al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates.” (Bukhari)

Takbeer in the Eids
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to emerge on the day of Eid-Al-Fitr and say the Takbeer up until he reached the Musallaa and up until he had performed the prayer. So when he had performed the prayer he stopped saying the Takbeer. (Silsilatul Ahadeeth As-Saheehah, 170)

Ibn Mas’ud RA used to say: “Allahu-Akbar. Allahu-Akbar. Laa ilaaha illallah. Wa-Allahu Akbar. Allahu-Akbaar. Wa lillaahil-Hamd” (Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest. There is none who has the right to be worshipped except Allah. Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and to Allah belongs all praise.)

Different route to and fro the Musallaa
Jabir Bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “When it was the day of Eid the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to alter his route (of returning).” (Bukhari)

Greeting
The companions when they met each other on Eid would say:“Taqabbala Allaaha minnaa wa minkum” May Allah accept it (the worship) from you and us. (Fath Al-Bari)

A THOUGHT

LOOK WITH THE EYES THAT LOVE HIM
--------------------------------------

If you desire that Allah may be pleasing to you, then look at Him with the eyes of them that love Him. Look not at that beauty with your own eyes, look at that object of desire with His votaries' eyes. Shut your own eyes from beholding that sweet object, and borrow from His admirers their eyes. Nay, borrow from Him both eyes and sight and with those eyes of His look upon His face in order that you may not be disappointed with the sight.

Allah says, "Whoso is Allah's, Allah also is his." He says, "I am his eye, his hand, his heart," that his good fortune may emerge from adversity. Whatsoever is hateful to you, if it should lead you to your beloved, at once becomes agreeable to you.
