Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Some of the Companions of the Prophet Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam saw Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree) in their dreams in the last seven nights of Ramadan, whereupon the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said, "I see that your dreams all agree upon the last seven nights. Whosoever seeks it, let him seek it in the last seven nights.'' [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary: "Tawat'at'' linguistically means to step or walk on, that is, to place foot over the place where one's fellow kept his foot. Here, it is used in the sense of correspondence. In other words, "I see that your dreams all agree upon the last seven nights'' stands to mean "you had similar dreams''. This was done by showing all of them the (spectacle) of Lailat-ul-Qadr. On the strength of these dreams, the Prophet Sallallahu Alyhi Wa Sallam said that Lailat-ul-Qadr should be sought in the last seven nights of Ramadan. The wisdom of keeping it secret is to keep people awake to engage in worship for a larger number of nights in this auspicious month.

Investigators in Pakistan are sifting through the remains of Islamabad's Marriott hotel searching for clues as to who was behind the weekend's suicide truck-bomb attack that killed at least 60 people and injured hundreds more. The truck used in the attack is said to have been packed with 600kg of explosives, including mortars, artillery shells and shrapnel.

A Palestinian woman has died during an Israeli raid near Jerusalem. Relatives said Mariam Ayyad, 57, attempted to block Israeli soldiers from arresting university students in her building in the village of Abu Dis on Sunday. They said she was beaten and pushed and she fell down the stairs. The Israeli military denies she was pushed by soldiers, saying only that she fell on a stairway.

Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister, has formally submitted his resignation to the Israeli president days after Tzipi Livni, the country's foreign minister, was elected as the new leader of the ruling Kadima party. Israel government spokesperson Mark Ragev. Olmert, who faces criminal indictment in corruption probes, could stay in office as caretaker prime minister for weeks or months until a new coalition government is formed or a new parliamentary election held.

President Thabo Mbeki has resigned from his post as the countries president. The resignation was tendered last night during Mbeki’s state of the nation address that was broadcasted by the SABC. Mbeki says that he has hopes for the incoming administration. It is currently unlikely who will take the reins from the president, but speculation is rife that the choices are with the Vice President of the ANC and strategically placed MP Kgalema Monthlanthe and also speaker of parliament and ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete.

SAUCE
125 ml milk. 60 ml caramel brown sugar (50 g). 60 g butter.

METHOD
Preheat oven to 180 °C. Place dates and water in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Remove from heat and leave to stand for about 5 minutes. Cream butter and castor sugar. Add eggs, one at a time and beat well after each addition. Sift flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda. Fold with dates and milk into egg mixture. Spoon in an ovenproof dish and bake for ± 50 minutes. For sauce: Place the milk, brown sugar and butter in a saucepan. Stir over low heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove the pudding from the oven and pour the sauce over top of pudding.
