THE STORY |
THE
NATURE OF THINGS
------------------------
Two friends were washing their bowls in the river when they
noticed a scorpion that was drowning. One of them immediately
scooped it up and set it upon the bank. In the process he
was stung. He went back to washing his bowl and again the
scorpion fell in. The friend saved the scorpion and was again
stung. The other friend asked him, "Friend, why do you
continue to save the scorpion when you know it's nature is
to sting?"
"Because,"
he replied, "to save it is my nature."
(Another
version of this story describes a fox who agrees to carry
a scorpion on its back across a river, upon the condition
that the scorpion does not sting him. But the scorpion does
indeed sting the fox when they are in midstream. As the fox
begins to drown, taking the scorpion with him, he pleadingly
asks why the scorpion has jeopardized both of them by stinging.
"Because it's my nature.")
Despite
the consequences all things can not be but what they are.
Each acts according to its nature and no amount of logic or
reason overcomes our basic fundamental nature...
Nature
shows you what is right, it is your choice to listen and follow
through with it no matter the cost." |

HEALTH TIPs |
SUNLIGHT
FOR PAIN and RELAXATION
--------------------------------------
Sunlight may be a key prescription for easing pain. A recent
hospital study (University of Pittsburgh, Jeffrey Walch and
Bruce Rabin) found that patients in sunnier rooms needed fewer
painkillers than patients in darker rooms. They were able
to cut their drug costs by 21%. Bright light improves mood
and triggers the release of "feel good" brain chemicals
such as serotonin.
Researchers
at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Centre found that
exposure to ultraviolet light may produce a relaxing effect.
The research was reported in the July issue of the Journal
of the American Academy of Dermatology. For six weeks, study
participants had tanning sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays
in two identical-looking tanning beds. They spent half of
each session in one bed and half in the other. Only one bed
used ultraviolet light (UV). UV light occurs naturally in
sunlight and is responsible for the tanning and burning effects
of the sun. Artificial UV light is used in tanning beds and
sunlamps. Mood was measured before and after each tanning
exposure. The results revealed greater relaxation and lower
tension after UV exposure compared to non-UV exposure. The
researchers theorize that UV exposure leads to the release
of chemicals in the brain called endorphins that are linked
to both pain relief and euphoric feelings.
If
you can't get natural sunlight, full-spectrum bulbs may have
the same effect. |

A THOUGHT |
SPEECH
---------
An intelligent youth possessed an abundant share of accomplishments
and discreet behaviour so that he was allowed to sit in assemblies
of learned men but he refrained from conversing with them.
His father once asked him why he did not likewise speak on
subjects he was acquainted with. He replied: 'I fear I may
be asked what I do not know and be put to shame.'
Hast
thou heard how a Sufi drove
A few nails under his sandals
And an officer taking him by the sleeve
Said to him: 'Come and shoe my horse.'
For
what thou hast not said no one will trouble thee
But when thou hast spoken...

THE SMILE |
DOING
NOTHING
----------------
An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.
A
small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit
like you and do nothing?'
The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.'
So,
the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All
of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate
it.
Moral
of the story:
To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very,
very high up. |
