HADITH, SAYINGS/TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
Abu Hurayrah RA reported: The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said, "Two angels descend every morning, and one says: `O Allah, give him who spends something, in place of what he spends.' The other one says: `O Allah, give destruction to him who withholds". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary: This Hadith provides justification to pray for virtuous people to get better than what they have spent and to destroy the wealth of the niggardly who refuse to spend in the way of Allah.

THE MESSAGE
EATING LESS

---------------
Allah Ta’aala states: "Eat and drink, but do not waste. Verily, Allah does not love those who transgress the limits."

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said: "Tasbeeh and Taqdees which are sufficient for those of the heaven will suffice for them (people) too." (Mishkaat)

This Hadith means that like Tasbeeh (reciting the Glories of Allah) and Taqdees (reciting the Holiness of Allah) are sufficient for the Malaa’ikah (Angels) in the heavens so will it suffice as nourishment for Muslims. It is narrated that certain saints remained without food for long periods in solitude engaged in Tasbeeh and Taqdees. It is clear from this Hadith that at times Thikr and Tasbeeh are sufficient as nourishment. However, it is not possible to adhere to the methods of food reduction practiced in former times. The people of those days were endowed with great physical strength and despite the great reduction in food they suffered no ill effect and maintained their full concentration in their Ibaadah activities. Their physical strength could be gauged from the type of spiritual exercises which they practiced. Some of their exercises were of such a severe nature that if anyone attempts to practice them today he will find his back breaking.

In reality Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam did not prescribe Taqleel-Ta'aam (EATING LESS), but altered the routine times of eating and in this way made the intervals between eating times longer. This change of habit (in eating times) and the longer intervals (between eating times) which are difficult upon the Nafs, have been considered by the Shariah to be representative of Taqleel-Ta’aam (EATING LESS). Among the various forms of Mujaahidah, fasting is the best. Hence, the Shariah has given Taqleel-e-Ta’aam the form of fasting. In the Shariah, reduction of food will therefore be fasting.

Eating less and remaining hungry are not forms of Mujaahidah of the Shariah. The significance (Fadheelah) of hunger mentioned in the Hadith does not refer to voluntary (i.e. self-imposed) hunger, but refers to involuntary hunger - hunger which comes one's way uninvited. The Hadith consoles such persons of poverty by explaining the virtues of hunger so that they do not worry and suffer unduly.

Patience in the face of such divinely imposed hunger, occasions Thawab and elevation of spiritual ranks. This significance of hunger is similar to the significance of sickness explained in the Hadith. The Hadith mentions Thawab for even sickness, but this does not mean that one has to voluntarily induce sickness.

The method of Qillat-e-Ta’aam mentioned in the book, "Tableegh-e- Deen" by lmaam Ghazaali Rahmatullah Alayh, has been forbidden because reduction in food is not the intended purpose of the Shariah, also because the physique of people of today is unlike that of the people of earlier times.

Qillat-e-Ta’aam is not an end in itself, but is a means of acquiring an intended aim. This intended aim and purpose is to weaken the animal urge in man, and the aim in weakening this urge is to prevent the Nafs from sin. Therefore, if the Nafs could be controlled and restrained from sin without reducing food then Taqleel-e-Ta'aam is not necessary.

Furthermore, cheerfulness and joy in Ibaadah are experienced if the body is in the state of health and strength. Experience shows that nowadays the health in most cases suffers as a result of Taqleel-Ta’aam. But, at the same time one must abstain from excessive eating and adhere to moderation. The capacity of people differs; hence moderation will differ for different persons. The guideline in this matter is to eat when hungry and to stop eating when you feel that you can yet eat a few more morsels. In other words, one is allowed to eat to one's stomach fill, but not to satisfy one’s desire.

DUA (PRAYER)
FOR AILMENTS OR WOUNDS ON THE BODY
It is reported by Sayyadatina Aisha RA that if a person was ailing in some part of his body, or if he had a wound, the Prophet would do with his finger as such, and Sufyãn put the tip of his finger in the ground, then lifted it, and said: Bismillãh turbatu 'ardhinã, bireeqati ba`dhinã, yusfãa saqeemunã, bi'ithni rabbinã… In the name of Allah, the dust of the earth, with the saliva of some of us, our sick is remedied with the permission of our Lord. Al-Bukhãri's translation by Hilãli and Khãn in a footnote says that: While reciting the charm (ruqyã) The Prophet took some of his saliva on his index finger and touched the earth with it and applied the resulting mixture to the place of ailment.

PERSONALITY
Dr. Allama Mohammad Iqbal (1837-1938 AD)
The whole nineteenth century was passing through a period of turmoil for the millions of Muslims of the Indian sub-continent. Their political and cultural arena was disturbed, but they were fortunate enough to have been graced by the birth of several geniuses who left their mark and influence of their lives. Dr. Allama Mohammad ‘Iqbal was one of the leaders of these luminaries.

He was born on 22 February 1873 in Sialkot, Punjab. His forefathers were Kashmiri Brahmims who accepted Islam, possibly in the seventeenth century. His father, Nur Muhammad, was a pious Muslim who resigned from government service and started doing business. He sent his eldest son, ‘Ata' Muhammad, to a madrasa, and sent the youngest son, ‘Iqbal, to a missionary school. Here in the mission school he met a famous and good ‘alim, Mir Hasan, who inspired ‘Iqbal to study Islam.

He devoted three years to his studies in Europe. He studied Philosophy at Cambridge University with the famous philosopher, James Ward, and others and then he did a PhD in Persian mysticism at Munich University in Germany. Then he passed the Bar-at-Law in England and taught as a professor of Arabic at London University for six months.

In 1915 ‘Iqbal wrote Asrar-I-Khudi, in 1917 Rumz-I-Bekhudi, in 1923 Payam-I-Mashriq, in 1924 Bang-I-Dera, and in 1927 Jabur-I-Azam. During this turbulent period many political upheavals were taking place in the Indian sub-continent and he could not remain isolated from the flow of these events. He jumped into them. In 1927 he became a Member of the Punjab Legislative Assembly and joined in active politics, voicing his fearless criticism of British rule. His advocacy for the rights of the people drew the attention of all.

In 1930, he was elected President of the Muslim League and he gave a fiery presidential speech at the Allahabad Conference of the League which was significant for many reasons. In this speech he gave a few original guidelines which were directed at the breaking of the political stalemate in India, and which gave an indication of a sovereign and independent Pakistan. Seven years later, on 20 June 1937, in a letter which he wrote to the Qa'id-I-Azam, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, he indicated the formation of a state comprising those provinces where Muslims were in the majority. Ten years later his prophecy came true and Pakistan was created, although he died in April, 1938, of heart failure.

In 1931 and 1932, he attended the Round Table Conference in London. In the 1932 Muslim League Conference he delivered is a moving speech which showed his deep political foresight: Nationalism as defined and believed in by Europe is not what I believe in. If this kind of nationalism is imported into India the Muslims will not benefit. I oppose it, seeing it as Godless materialism, and this is what I believe to be the principal enemy of modern humanitarianism … What is most important is that a man lives on religion, culture and his tradition. He dies for these, and he lives for these, but certainly not for a land where he was accidentally born.”

In 1924 he suffered a chest pain, which later, in 1934, developed into serious throat trouble, as a result of which he lost his voice. In 1934, he was invited by Oxford University to speak on Rhodes, but for health reasons he had to decline the invitation. In 1937, he had a cataract in his eyes. He also had heart trouble and suffered from asthma. He died on 20 April 1938. Before he died, he wrote his last few lines of verse: A believer (in Allah), what is his sign? Listen: he accepts death with a smile. The life of this fakir is at its end here; Another fakir may or may not come here.

His whole philosophy of life was dictated by the Qur'anic teachings and the Hadith of the Prophet. He was a keen advocate of the Qur'an and Sunnah as the main source of our strength. He was undoubtedly a great poet of Islam, a great forerunner of Islamic revival, and a great thinker of modern Islamic reformation. All his writing is full of Islamic ideals and Islamic glory and the beauty of Islam. He was all for the Islamic heritage and Islam's glorious past.

To sum up, he was a modern Rumi, but he was not influenced by Rumi. He glowed by his own light and genius. He was indeed a great thinker and reformer.

RECIPE
FISH AND CHIPS
Serves 4-6
1 kg fresh hake, skinned and filleted - Salt and pepper - Flour for dusting.

BATTER
250 ml flour - 3 ml salt - 30 g butter, melted1 extra large egg – WATER.

CHIPS
6 large potatoes, peeled - Oil for deep frying.

Cut fish into portions, season and dust lightly with flour. Make batter by sifting flour and salt into bowl. Whisk butter and egg with a fork, then add water and stir into dry ingredients to form a smooth batter. For really smoth batter use electric, just for 1 or 2 mins. Set aside and prepare chips. Cut potatoes into sticks rinse and dry with paper towel. Preheat oil until cube of bread dropped into oil browns in seconds. Fry chips until beginning to brown and remove from oil onto draining paper. Dip fish into batter and fry in hot oil for 3 to 5 mins, turn over and fry on other side. Remove and place on draining paper. Refry chips until heated through and crisp, and serve immediately with fish.

HANDY HINT
Opening brand new jars can be a feat in itself. Well, I have found a way to make it the easiest thing to do. Instead of banging a jar of jam, pickles, etc., with a knife until it loosens up, I simply reach into the drawer and pull out the handy nutcracker. It adjusts to the size of the jar and I simply give it a good twist and off pops the lid!

A THOUGHT
"I love you"

Perhaps the most important three words that you can say. Telling someone that you truly love them satisfies a person's deepest emotional needs; the need to belong, to feel appreciated and to be wanted. Your family, your friends and you, all need to hear those three little words.

THE SMILE
Smith goes to see his supervisor in the front office. "Boss," he says, "we're doing some heavy house-cleaning at home tomorrow, and my wife needs me to help with the attic and the garage, moving and hauling stuff."

"We're short-handed, Smith" the boss replies. "I can't give you the day off."

"Thanks, boss," says Smith "I knew I could count on you!"
