HADITH, SAYINGS/TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
`Abdullah bin `Amr bin Al-`as (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Neglecting one's own dependents is a reason enough for a man to commit a sin". [Abu Dawud]

The narration in Muslim is: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "It is enough sin for a person to hold back the due of one whose provision is in his hand".

Commentary: This Hadith tells us that negligence in matter of maintenance of one's family is such a great sin that if a person is free from all other sins, this one alone will be enough to make him accountable before Allah. The words used in this Hadith are so comprehensive that they include servants and workers besides family and children because he is also equally responsible for their maintenance. Thus, this Hadith makes it evident that it is the responsibility of the head of the family to provide the necessities of life to all of his dependents; and any negligence on his part in this respect is a great sin.

THE MESSAGE
Self Examination
By Sh Usaamah Al-Khayyaat (Imam of Haram)
---------------------------------------------------
Have you observed how a skilful and resourceful merchant constantly reflects on how his business fluctuates; about his gains and losses and the causes for both? Have you seen how he looks for how to improve his business and how to prevent its decline and downfall? This is exactly how the vigilant Muslim should be during the course of his whole life; with the passing of each of its stages. They should pause at the end of every stage in their life and cast a critical look back at whatever they have said and done. They should call themselves to an accurate account and rectify themselves as necessary.

The examination of one’s conscience and calling oneself to account with intelligence has immense benefits. Among these benefits are that a person who does this will discover their weaknesses and defects as well as their strengths, good deeds and points of excellence. This will enable them the opportunity of working towards a constructive plan which will lead to a better pattern of conduct in the future.
Is it any wonder then, that the policy of examination of one’s conscience occupied such a prominent role in the life of our pious predecessors? This policy manifested itself in their practicing it and encouraging others to do likewise.

‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab said, “Call yourselves to account before you yourself are called to it and weigh your deeds before the day when they shall be weighed for you.”

Al-Hasan Al-Basree said, “The true believer is a guardian of his own self and continuously calls his soul to account for the sake of Allah. The reckoning of the Day of Resurrection will only be difficult for those who live the life of this world without ever examining their conscience and calling themselves to account.” He then explained that the essence of self-examination is when a believer pauses after having performed a deed and notices that he is negligent in a matter and then addresses himself saying, “What did I intend with this deed? I swear by Allah that I will not be excused for it. I swear by Allah that I will never do it again, Insha Allah!”

Among the issues that desperately need self-examination in the view of intelligent people nowadays is the examination of one’s deeds during vacations. This is a time when a wise person will ask themselves difficult questions that need sincere answers.
What did everyone do for themselves in these days of vacation? Was this vacation a track for racing towards good and righteous deeds that are everlasting, or just another avenue to increase one’s store of evil deeds with wrongdoing? Was it an opportunity to gain additional knowledge and increase oneself in psychological, mental and physical maturity or just a period of time wasted in laziness? Were the journeys of those who travelled to various countries for the purpose of education or was it just another race towards the forbidden and harmful matters?

Was the vacationing person – during their vacation – carrying out their commitments toward their family and kith and kin, being kind to those who are unkind to them, making peace where there was discord and assisting the weak or did they just increase in negligence, rudeness and estrangement?

Dear brothers! Self-examination after each act and every stage in our lives is vital if we want our affairs to be upright and proper and we wish to have a good ending. If we all did this then we would all have a great victory in this world and on the Day of Judgment. Allah says that which translates to, “O you who believe! Fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow – and fear Allah. Indeed Allah is acquainted with what you do.” (Al-Hashr: 18).

Brothers in faith! Examining oneself and calling oneself to account is evidence of one’s intelligence and aspiration for things that may lead one to happiness and success. Fear Allah and covetously continue to examine yourselves sincerely. Especially during these days when you are bidding farewell to your vacation, resuming your duties and opening a new chapter in your lives. You must inevitably reflect on what has passed, determine to rectify it and have a constructive plan for the remaining days of your lives.

DUA/PRAYER
SHOPPING
The Messenger of Allah said: "Whoever enters the marketplace and says: Lã 'ilãha 'illã 'allãhu wahdahu lã shareeka lahu, lahul mulku, wa lahul hamdu, yuhyee wa yumeetu, wa huwa hayyun lã yamootu, biyadihil khayru, wa huwa 'alã kulli shay'in qadeerun There is no 'ilãh except Allah, no partner does He have; his is the Kingdom, and to Him is all Praise; He livens, and mortifies; and He is alive; never to die. In his Hand is all good, and He is well able to do everything. Allah would write for him one thousand merits, would remit from him one thousand sins, and would raise for him [his status] one thousand levels".

PERSONALITY
Abu Mohammed, Al-Qaasim bin Mohammed bin Abi Bakr Al-Sadeeq was of the eminent Al-Taabi'een and one of the seven jurists of Madinah. He was similar in appearance to his grandfather, Abu Bakr. He was virtuous, pious, a reliable source and an acutely intelligent scholar of the Sunnah, for the people of his era. Magnanimous, with a pleasant nature, if one quarrelled with him about something, he said to him, "Is this what you want to contend with me in; to you it is; indeed it was the right; it is to you it yields and do not commend me in it; and truly it was mine; and you of it in solution and it to you.”

He was of whom introduced Hadith word for word and was scarcely defective with one. It has been narrated that 'Umar bin 'Abd Al-'Aziz said, "If it was me that ordered this (thing), it would not it succeed except by Al-Qaasim bin Mohammed". When that reached Al-Qaasim, he said, "Indeed my family debilitates me, so how (would I be) with the affairs of the nation". It has been reported that a Bedouin asked him, "Is the scholar you or Saalim?". He responded, "All praises are for Allah, he informs you what knowledge is". He said, "Are you a scholar?". He responded, "Glory be to Allah". He returned and said, "That is Saalim, rush and ask him." He rose for him. He thought that he said that I am the scholar he recommended. He thought that he said Saalim is a scholar of me. He lied.

He was blind in the last of his days. He died in Qudaid, which is between Makkah and Madinah, while on the Hajj, or visiting.

RECIPE
SWISS ROLL
Ingredients
5 extra large eggs – separated - 1 cup castor sugar - 1 tsp vanilla essence - ¼ cup maizena - 1 tsp heaped baking powder - ¾ cup flour.

Method
Beat egg whites till stiff approximately 20 mins. Add castor sugar and vanilla essence to egg yolks beat till light in colour. Add the sifted flour maizena and baking powder. Do not over mix the mixture. Smear 1 tsp oil on a swiss roll pan and line with wax paper. Pour the mixture into the pan and bake at 180 for 17/18 mins. When baked remove cake onto slightly damp cloth, remove wax paper. With the cloth roll and form into swiss roll. When cool unroll spread jam and fresh cream. Dust with icing sugar.

HANDY HINT
For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put dishwashing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't refreeze.

A THOUGHT
Whenever a sinful and distressed worshipper stretches forth the hand of repentance with hopes of acceptance to the court of heaven, Allah the most high does not notice him, whereon he continues to implore mercy with supplications and tears and Allah the most holy says: O my angels, verily I am ashamed of my servant and he has no other lord besides myself. Accordingly I have fully pardoned him.

See the generosity and kindness of Allah.
The servant has committed sin and he is ashamed.
[Sadi]
