THE MESSAGE
Thinking doesn't have to be a Phenomenon; it can be a Reality
by Saadia Malik
----------------
Obsessions with accepting faith as it is, seems widespread. Never would I have been convinced of this ignorance, harkening in the corridors of the educated, if it weren't for the internet. The web has made person to person contact, regardless of time and space, very much a reality. Websites on every and any subject have made their way into people's computers. I have always found myself specifically attracted to the public forum features that one finds in abundance on the net. Some may say it's merely wastage of time; but for people like me, who do fortunately have some time to spare; it is an alternative – a cheaper opportunity to correspond with people of the world. What does someone sitting somewhere in Africa do for a living? What faith does he/she hold? And more specifically, for the purposes of this essay, if he/she is a Muslim, what does Islam mean for them? Where do they get their Islam from?

Mostly, my exposure has taught me the following: if you're resident to a Muslim majority country, you'll learn your Islam from your elders, and then, accept what you acquired once as the unalterable word forever. If, on the other hand, you belong to a pre-dominantly non-Muslim country, you are either happy to be “non-religious”, or you struggle every inch you can, to reach the truth. You like to think. You like to make sense out of everything. You like to believe that Islam is a natural religion, as opposed merely; to connoting the word with a set of dogmas come what may. These are, of course, generalized observations; exceptions are always there.

The intent of this piece is merely to impress upon all peoples – not only Muslims, but the entire humanity - to adopt an inquisitive approach. The idea is not to influence people into becoming stubborn yahoos, but to induce them to use their intellect. After all, the grey matter has found place in the human body for a reason. There is so much room to make a difference. If you start thinking today, you can change a person tomorrow.

Firstly, we need to know, that to think is to thank the Almighty for blessing us with the ability to do so. Cast one look at the mentally retarded, who cannot flex their brain muscles, and you'll realize what a great, great, great blessing this is from the Creator.

Secondly, we should also be convinced of the fact that questioning a belief, for purposes of sincerity, does not entail disbelief; rather, quite the opposite.

Thirdly, going against the beliefs of one's elders or the most prominent scholars of the past, does not amount to disrespecting them. Faith is a matter between man and Allah. Let not worldly concerns deviate you from the Truth. Prophet Muhammad, SAW, believed in something, and went on to preach what did not define his own father's life; he spent his life warning the rejectors of faith, while his own beloved uncle, Abu Talib, held reservations against the message that was brought to him. Famous traditional exegete, Ibn Kathir was a student of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah; yet, the former would not always uphold everything his teacher said, despite an enormous amount of respect. The best of Muslims have always striven to find their own. If not all, most of us are convinced of the competence of the four Imams. Do we not realize that they are categorized as four and not as one, because they respectfully differed? There's is an envious example. Why can't you and I disagree with each other, and simultaneously, respect each other for those differences? It's not so tough.

Fourthly, difference of opinion must be tolerated. If Allah had wanted, He could have created us all alike. We would have thought in similar fashions and we would have reached the same conclusions. He chose diversity. Let's try and understand why. Difference of opinion, if you come to appreciate it, is from among the providence of Allah, without which, life would have been an absolute bore. The fruits of struggle are what make this life worth living. The realization of achievement is an important aspect of each one of our lives. For all we know, in the absence of diversity, I would not be penning down my thoughts here, and you wouldn't be eager to read, even if I did, since we'd have nothing to read, nothing to share, nothing to learn. The companions of the Prophet, SAW, too, shared many a differences – culturally and intellectually – and for that, they stand revered.

Fifthly, if something different from our currently held beliefs appeals to our intellect, we should not find shame, but pride in accepting the better, stronger opinion. To accept is what makes a man noble. To reject and deliberately deny oneself the opportunity to progress and grow is to cheat one's own heart and mind. We should, on the contrary, strive to bring the two at peace with one another.

DUA (PRAYER)
Allah's Bounties upon Man
Allah SWT said with respect to the story of the two men: "Why do you not, when you enter into your garded say: Mã shã'a 'allãhu lã quwwata 'illã bil-lãhi"

It is reported of the Prophet that if he saw something he liked he would say 'Al-hamdu lil-lãhi 'allathee bini`matihi tatimmus-sãlihãtu, and if he saw something he disliked he would say, 'Al-hamdu lil-lãhi 'alã kulli hãlin .

AND… FOR THE KIDDIES
Eight Things to Learn
Once a scholar asked one of his students, "You have spent a long time with me, what have you learnt?" He said I learnt eight things:

First, I looked to the creation. Everyone has a loved one. When he goes to the grave, he leaves his loved one. Therefore, I made my loved one my good deeds; that way, they will be with me in the grave.

Second, I looked to the verse, "But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust," therefore, I struggled against my desires so I could stay obeying Allah.

Third, I saw that if anyone has something with him that is worth something, he will protect it. Then I thought about the verse, “That which you have is wasted away; and that which is with Allah remains," therefore, everything worth something with me I devoted to Him so it would be with Him for me.

Fourth, I saw the people seeking wealth, honour and positions and it was not worth anything to me. Then I thought about Allah's words, "Lo, the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the most aware of Allah, so I did my best to become aware of Allah in order to gain nobility in his sight.

Fifth, I saw the people being jealous towards each other and I looked at the verse, "We have apportioned among them their livelihood in the life of the world", so I left jealousy.

Sixth, I saw the people having enmity and I thought about the verse, "Lo, the devil is an enemy for you, so take him as an enemy", so I left enmity and I took the Satan as my only enemy.

Seventh, I saw them debasing themselves in search of sustenance and I thought about the verse, "And there is not a beast in the earth but the sustenance thereof depends on Allah", so I kept myself busy with my responsibilities toward Him and I left my property with Him.

Eighth, I found them relying on their business, buildings and health and I thought about the verse, "And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, He will suffice him", therefore, I put my trust only on Allah.

A THOUGHT
We see trees everyday and everywhere; however, have you ever thought how water reaches the farthest leaf on the top branch of a lofty tree? We can have a better understanding of the extraordinary nature of this by way of a comparison. It is impossible for the water in a tank in the basement of your building to climb to higher floors without a hydrophoric tank or some other powerful engine. You cannot pump water even to the first floor. Therefore, there should also be in trees a pumping system similar to the hydrophoric engine. Otherwise, since water would not be able to reach the trunk of the tree and the branches, trees would soon die. Allah has created each tree with all the necessary equipment. Moreover, the hydraulic system in many trees is too superior to be compared to the building in which one lives.

THE SMILE
The Idiot, the Wise Man and the Jug
An idiot may be the name given to the ordinary man, who consistently misinterprets what happens to him, what he does, or what is brought about by others. He does this so completely plausibly that -for himself and his peers - large areas of life and thought seem logical and true.

An idiot of this kind was sent one day with a pitcher to a wise man, to collect some water. On the way the idiot, through his own heedlessness, smashed the jar against a rock. When he arrived at the house of the wise man, he presented him with the handle of the pitcher, and said: "So-and-so sent you this pitcher, but a horrid stone stole it from me." Amused and wishing to test his coherence, the wise man asked: "Since the pitcher is stolen, why do you offer me the handle?"

"I am not such a fool as people say," the idiot told him, "and therefore I have brought the handle to prove my story."
