HADITH, TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
Sayyadina Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: "He whom Allah intends good, He makes him to suffer from some affliction". [Al-Bukhari]

Commentary: Troubles of this world like grief, calamity, disease, poverty, loss of life and property, etc., have a compassionate aspect for a Muslim in the sense that on account of them he turns towards Allah and begs mercy and compassion from Him because of which his sins are forgiven. Thus, in these troubles there is a blessing for him in the Hereafter.

THE MESSAGE
Self-knowledge

"Truth telling is not compatible with the defence of the realm." - George Bernard Shaw

Healthy self-esteem grows from self-acceptance based on self-knowledge. That is why it is so important to tell ourselves the truth and get our facts straight. If our self-knowledge is spotty or inaccurate, the very basis of our self-esteem is threatened.

Self-knowledge is gained by degrees. Many of us worked hard, for example, to own up to the hurt in our lives. For years we said, "its fine," "It doesn't matter," or "I'm okay, let's talk about you." We had to struggle to say, "That bothered me a lot," "My feelings were hurt," or "I decided not to put myself into that situation again." That's progress!

But even then, we may be "defending the realm" of the fearful ego. Acknowledging pain and acknowledging the depth of the pain are not the same. It is one thing to admit hurt and another to admit a broken heart. It is one thing to say, "I don't like this," and another to say, "I feel like dying." Minimizing our pain is better than denying it. But self-knowledge constructed of half-truths will always be spotty. To be honest about the depth of the hurt is the only real honesty.

DUA (PRAYER)
The Messenger of Allah said: "The petition of Thin-Noon [Jonah/Yunus AS] which he petitioned with when he was inside the whale: Lã 'ilaha 'illã 'anta, subhãnaka 'innee kuntu minath-thalimeena. There is none worthy of worship besides You (O Allah) surely I am from the oppressors. No Muslim ever supplicated Allah with this supplication in any matter at all, except that Allah answered his supplication".

THE STORY
EVERY GOOD DEED IS CHARITY
Two men, Moosa and Ebrahim were both seriously ill and occupied the same hospital room. Moosa was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window. Ebrahim had to spend all his time flat on his back. Moosa and Ebrahim for hours on end spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in deen, where they had been on vacation, their Haj etc.

Every afternoon when Moosa could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. Ebrahim in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and colour of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Flowers of every colour and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As Moosa described all this in exquisite detail, Ebrahim on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window, Moosa described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear - he could see it. In his mind's eye as the Moosa by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed. One morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take Moosa's body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, Ebrahim asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall. Ebrahim asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that Moosa was partially blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

Lessons: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things Allah has endowed you with that money can't buy.

THE SMILE
A mental hospital was critically overcrowded. The doctors decide to get all the patients seated in one large room to conduct a test to see how many they could discharge that day. At the front of the room one doctor took some chalk and drew a full size door on a blackboard and offered an ice cream to any patient who could open the door. There was a mad rush for the door with the patients scratching and clawing at the door and the handle. The doctors were disappointed, until they noticed a single patient who remained in his chair and was quietly chuckling to himself as watched his fellow patients.

Encouraged that at least 1 patient could be discharged today, the doctors asked him why he wasn't trying to open the door. The patient, who could no longer contain his laughter, shouted "I've got the key!!!"
