UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AN
SURAH ABAS CONTINUED…
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE BENEFICIENT THE MOST MERCIFUL

[18] From a drop of semen! He created him, and designed him in due proportion.

The word Qaddara is derived from Taqdir which is also used in the sense of 'predestination'. Taking the word in this sense, the verse may also mean that when man is under creation in his mother's womb, Allah predetermines four things for him: his life span, his sustenance, his deeds and whether he would be miserable or happy [as in the Hadith of Ibn Masud. recorded by Shaikhain]

THE MESSAGE
12 Tips for Muslim Youth
-------------------------------

Why should you, a young Muslim, be helping to bring your friends closer to Allah?

After all, you've got your own struggles to deal with: trying to explain why you pray to hostile teachers, Hijab discrimination, standing up in class when the professor attacks Islam, dealing with parents who think you've gone nuts because you're growing a beard, or all the other difficulties faced by a number of practicing Muslim youth?

Islam was never meant to be an individualistic faith, reserved for the "chosen few". Muslims have a duty to spread the Deen, and practicing Muslim youth, whether beginners, activists or leaders have a crucial role to play.

"Allah has put them in a position that perhaps no one else is in," notes Sheema Khan, former Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA) advisor for eastern Canada. "They have the means to communicate with their peers, they have an understanding of what they're going through plus they have the guidance of Islam."

Who is your childhood friend, who would rather spend Fridays at MacDonald's than the Masjid, or your classmate who is Muslim in name and only knows that "Muslims don't eat pork" going to listen to: the nice Imam of the Masjid who would freak out if he saw the way they were dressed and talked or you who may have grown up with them, joked with them, or see them everyday in school?

The answer is obvious: you. Don't panic. Here are some tips and advice which can help from other Muslims, many of whom have been there and done that. read more

DUA (PRAYER)
A DUA FOR PAIN

ALLHUMMA ATH HIBIL BA’SA RABBAN NAAS ISHFEEH ANTASH SHAAFEE LAA SHIFAA AN ILLAA SHIFAAUK SHIFAAUN LAA YUGHAUDIRU SAQAMAN

“O Allah! Remove the pain. O Lord of the people! Grant cure to this. You are the curer. Grant such a cure that no such illness remains.”

STORIES TO LEARN FROM
A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of Allah, the barber said: "I don't believe that Allah exists."

"Why do you say that?" asked the customer. "Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that Allah doesn't exist. Tell me, if Allah exists, would there be so many sick people? Would there be poverty, rape, murder, suicides? If Allah existed, there would be neither suffering nor pain. I can't imagine a loving Allah who would allow all of these things."

The customer thought for a moment, but didn't respond because he didn't want to start an argument. The barber finished his job and the customer left the shop. Just after he left the barbershop, he saw a man in the street with long, stringy, dirty hair. He looked dirty and unkempt. The customer turned back and entered the barber shop again and he said to the barber: "you know what? I don’t believe in barbers, barbers do not exist."

"How can you say that?" asked the surprised barber. "I am here, and I am a barber. And I just worked on you!" "No!" the customer exclaimed. "Barbers don't exist because if they did, there would be no people with dirty long hair and unkempt beards, like that man outside."

"Ah, but barbers do exist! That’s what happens when people do not come to me."

"Exactly!" affirmed the customer. "That’s the point! Allah, too, does exist! That’s what happens when people do not go to him and don't look to him for help. That’s why there's so much pain and suffering in the world." so ask yourself this question, is it going to take Allah to set a tragedy upon your life for you to turn back and worship him? Stop thrilling yourselves, Allah does not only exist when you need him!!!

QUOTE
WHERE IS ALLAH?

“I searched the mountains and the valleys but neither in the heights nor in the depths I able to find Him. I went to the Kaaba in Makkah, but He was not there either. I questioned the scholars and philosophers, but He was beyond their understanding. I then looked into my heart and it was there where He dwelled that I saw him; He was nowhere else to be found.” Jalaluddin Rumi

A THOUGHT
Don't ever confuse the two, your life and your work. You will walk out of here with only one thing that no one else has. There will be hundreds of people out there with your same degree: there will be thousands of people doing what you want to do for a living. But you will be the only person alive who has sole custody of your life. Your particular life. Your entire life. Not just your life at a desk or your life on a bus or in a car or at the computer. Not just the life of your mind, but the life of your heart. Not just your bank accounts but also your soul.

THE SMILE
Actual headlines collected from local, national, and international newspapers that are rather ambiguous. It is clear what the writer was trying to say, but in each case there is a funnier interpretation of the headline. Enjoy!

NEWS
Pakistani helicopter gunships have reportedly killed ten suspected fighters and accomplices, including foreign fighters, in an operation in the South Waziristan tribal district bordering Afghanistan. Tribesmen initially recovered 10 bodies and the same number of injured in the Zamzola region. Five of the dead were Afghans and three were locals but the identity of the remaining two could not be ascertained. Local residents also protested against the attack.

Inspectors from the UN nuclear watchdog have visited Iran's uranium enrichment plant and are to hold talks with atomic officials. The International Atomic Energy Agency inspections team has visited the installations in Natanz and will meet Iranian nuclear officials. It remains unclear how far Iran has advanced with its plans for uranium enrichment, a process that can be used both to make a nuclear bomb and nuclear fuel.

An east African bloc is asking eight outside nations to contribute troops to a proposed regional peacekeeping mission in lawless Somalia. The Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has approached the countries to man the planned 8,000-strong force endorsed by the African Union and the United Nations but strongly opposed by Somali Islamic groups. Thus far, only one IGAD member, Uganda, has publicly offered to contribute to the mission and few others appear likely to do so as Somalia's immediate neighbours, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya are precluded from participating under a UN mandate.

Iraqi security forces killed at least 38 fighters and arrested 147 more over the past 24 hours. Diyala, with its flashpoint capital city of Baquba, is the most dangerous province of Iraq after Baghdad. In a separate statement the ministry said another 92 fighters were arrested and many caches of weapons seized in a raid by Iraqi forces south of Baghdad.

Nineteen residents of the Reeston informal settlement in East London were arrested for public violence following a protest march. Superintendent Mtati Tana said they were among about 300 residents who blocked roads using burning tyres and intimidated motorists who wanted to drive through. Residents also intimidated police who tried to remove tree barks and tyres to make way for motorists," he said. The protesters were detained at the Cambridge police station and are expected to appear in the East London Magistrate's Court soon. Reeston residents took to the streets in protest at poor municipal service delivery.
