HADITH, SAYINGS/TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "He who takes care of an orphan, whether he is his relative or a stranger, will be in Jannah with me like these two". The narrator, Malik bin Anas raised his forefinger and middle finger for illustration. [Muslim]

Commentary: The Islamic system of welfare and economic security is not restricted to relatives only. It includes every orphan and needy. If Muslims put this system into practice, there will be no need for insurance - a system which is based on usury. May Allah enable the Muslims to adopt the teachings of Islam so that they will be relieved of the curse of the system of usury.

THE MESSAGE
Choosing a Friend
Moulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi Saheb RA
----------------------------------------

Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam stated: - "Every person is on the creed (way of life) of his friend. Therefore, a person should see who he is affiliated with." In other words, if his friend is religious, he will also be pious. If he is irreligious, he is sure to be the same. Hence, the irreligiousness of his friend is a cause for his irreligiousness and the piety of his friend is a cause for his piety. And this cause is what is referred to in technical terms as "common external causes."

The real or actual cause for everything is however, subjected to the will of Allah Ta’aala. Allah Ta’aala has made certain causes logical but they are all "common external causes." This is the gist of this Hadith... In other words, a person should ponder over his friendship and contemplate that the person whom I have selected as a friend, in terms of religiousness and piety, is he worth befriending or not?

The Malady of Bad Company is eternally Contagious
Nonetheless, the point is that in regards to the contagion of certain diseases which are neither established nor convincing, such precautions are taken that people avoid visiting the patients and also protect their children from being exposed to the disease. But the sickness that is eternal, i.e. the evil effects of bad company, no degree of vigilance whatsoever is awarded to it. Remember this is the most contagious disease. Be very careful of it. Examine the condition of those you meet and come into contact with. Meeting in this context refers to intimate and loosely acquainted meetings. At times, coming into contact with others is inevitable e.g. in the market-place, one meets all types of people. Such encounters are exempted (from our discussion). Only closely acquainted and intimate meetings are referred to in this discussion.

Rasullullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam used the phrase "upon the creed of his "Khaleel" (friend). He didn't say "upon the creed of his "sahib" (one in his company). Khaleel is a reference to a close and intimate companion. Do people pay due regard to the type of people they come into contact with? Do they ever contemplate over the piety or the irreligiousness of their companions?

PERSONALITY
Abu Dharr Al-Ghifar RA
In the Waddan valley which connects Makkah with the outside world, lived the tribe of Ghifar. The Ghifar existed on the meagre offerings of the trade caravans of the Quraysh which plied between Syria and Makkah. It is likely that they also lived by raiding these caravans when they were not given enough to satisfy their needs.

Jundub ibn Junadah, nicknamed Abu Dharr, was a member of this tribe. He was known for his courage, his calmness and his far sightedness and also for the repugnance he felt against the idols which his people worshipped. He rejected the silly religious beliefs and the religious corruption in which the Arabs were engaged.

While he was in the Waddan desert, news reached Abu Dharr that a new Prophet had appeared in Makkah. He really hoped that his appearance would help to change the hearts and minds of people and lead them away from the darkness of superstition. Without wasting much time, he called his brother, Anis, and said to him: "Go to Makkah and get whatever news you can of this man who claims that he is a Prophet and that revelation comes to him from the heavens. Listen to some of his sayings and come back and recite them to me."

Anis went to Makkah and met the Prophet SAW. He listened to what he had to say and returned to the Waddan desert. Abu Dharr met him and anxiously asked for news of the Prophet.

"I have seen a man," reported Anis, "who calls people to noble qualities and there is no mere poetry in what he says."
"What do people say about him?" asked Abu Dharr.
"They say he is a magician, a soothsayer and a poet."
"My curiosity is not satisfied. I am not finished with this matter. Will you look after my family while I go out and examine this prophet's mission myself?"
"Yes. But beware of the Makkans."

On his arrival at Makkah, Abu Dharr immediately felt very apprehensive and he decided to exercise great caution. The Quraysh were noticeably angry over the denunciation of their gods. Abu Dharr heard of the terrible violence they were meting out to the followers of the Prophet but this was what he expected. He therefore refrained from asking anyone about Muhammad not knowing whether that person might be a follower or an enemy.

At nightfall, he lay down in the Sacred Masjid. Ali ibn abi Talib passed by him and, realising that he was a stranger, asked him to come to his house. Abu Dharr spent the night with him and in the morning took his water pouch and his bag containing provisions and returned to the Masjid. He had asked no questions and no questions were asked of him.

On the third night, however, Ali asked him, "Aren't you going to tell me why you came to Makkah?" "Only if you will give me an undertaking that you will guide me to what I seek." Ali agreed and Abu Dharr said: "I came to Makkah from a distant place seeking a meeting with the new Prophet and to listen to some of what he has to say."

Ali's face lit up with happiness as he said, "By Allah, he is really the Messenger of Allah," and he went on telling Abu Dharr more about the Prophet and his teaching. Finally, he said: "When we get up in the morning, follow me wherever I go. If I see anything which I am afraid of for your sake, I would stop as if to pass water. If I continue, follow me until you enter where I enter."

Abu Dharr did not sleep a wink the rest of that night because of his intense longing to see the Prophet and listen to the words of revelation. In the morning, he followed closely in Ali's footsteps until they were in the presence of the Prophet. "As-salaamu alayka yaa Rasulullah, (Peace be on you, O Messenger of Allah)," greeted Abu Dharr. "Wa alayka salaamullahi wa rahmatuhu wa barakaatuhu (And on you be the peace of Allah, His mercy and His blessings)," replied the Prophet.

Abu Dharr was thus the f1rst person to greet the Prophet with the greeting of Islam. After that, the greeting spread and came into general use.

The Prophet, peace be on him, welcomed Abu Dharr and invited him to Islam. He recited some of the Qur'an for him. Before long, Abu Dharr pronounced the Shahadah, thus entering the new religion (without even leaving his place). He was among the first persons to accept Islam.

In the year 32 AH, the self-denying Abu Dharr passed away. The Prophet, peace be upon him, had said of him: "The earth does not carry nor the heavens cover a man more true and faithful than Abu Dharr."

A THOUGHT
'Glorified is the Ever-living (Lord), for whom there is no Death' At any time sorrowful and unliked events may - and will - descend upon you, your Lord makes them a means of approach to Him that He may pour out everlasting Love Oceans on His beloved servants.

THE SMILE
John was furious when his steak arrived too rare.
"Waiter," he shouted, "Didn't you hear me say 'well done'?"
"I can't thank you enough, sir," replied the waiter. "I hardly ever
get a compliment."

NEWS
Israel's military intelligence chief has claimed that Lebanon's Hezbollah is rearming itself following last summer's war with Israel and that a UN peacekeeping force is doing nothing to stop it. Hezbollah, which Israel and the United States claim is armed by Damascus and Tehran, touched off the 34-day war when its fighters captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid in July. The UN Security Council adopted a resolution in August that led to a ceasefire and the beefing up of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, giving it a mandate to assist the government in disarming militias.

Two US airstrikes in Somalia killed large numbers of Islamic fighters believed to be sheltering suspects in the 1998 bombings of two US Embassies in East Africa. Witnesses said civilians were among the dead. The attacks, by a U.S. Special Forces AC-130 gunship, came after the suspects were spotted hiding on a remote island on the southern tip of Somalia, close to the Kenyan border. It was the first overt military action by the U.S. in Somalia since it led a U.N. force in the 1990s that intervened in Somalia in an effort to fight famine. The mission led to clashes between U.N. forces and Somali warlords, including the "Black Hawk Down" battle that left 18 U.S. servicemen dead.

Hundreds of people have been left homeless in Zambia's central copperbelt region after their makeshift houses collapsed as a result of torrential rains. About 200 houses have collapsed because of the heavy rains. Most of the homes were in the densely-populated Chipulukusu township on the outskirts of the city of Ndola, some 400 kilometers north of the capital Lusaka. A government disaster management unit has been dispatched to assess the damage and provide temporary shelters for the affected families. Most of the houses that collapsed were made from hand-made blocks and the structures were too weak to withstand the continued heavy rainfall in the area.

Convicted Durban businessman Schabir Shaik would not be seeking a medical pardon, his brother Yunis Shaik said in a statement. The statement comes in the wake of a statement by former South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights KwaZulu-Natal chairman Derrick Mdluli that he would meet with Minister of Correctional Services Ngconde Balfour "to discuss pardoning Shaik from his sentence because of his ill health". Mdluli had told the Daily News newspaper that he would be visiting Shaik in hospital to discuss Shaik's options.

Police are investigating a case of arson after a fire raged through a four-story block of flats in central Pretoria. Spokesman Inspector Paul Ramaloko said the cause of the fire at Kinnoulle Mansions on Prinsloo Street was unknown and a case of arson would be investigated. Tshwane emergency services spokesman Johan Pieterse said the fire started in flat number 54 before 1pm and spread quickly, engulfing seven others. Pieterse estimated that damage caused by the fire could run into millions. Sixty people were evacuated from the building by emergency workers and no injuries were reported, he said. The fire had been put out after about two hours. It had spread onto the roof of the building from the east to the west side.
