UNDERSTANDING
THE QUR’AN
SURAH ABAS CONTINUED…
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICIENT THE MOST MERCIFUL
[19] then He made the way easy for him
COMMENTARY: (then He made the way easy for him...80:20) Allah through His wisdom creates man in his mother's womb, creation after creation, within three layers of darkness [i.e. the belly, the womb and the amniotic membrane]. It is kept in a safe place in the belly. The mother in whose belly all this is happening is totally unaware of any of the details of this process. Thereafter, when the baby becomes perfect with all its limbs and organs, Allah made it possible that a body weighing 3 to 4 kg comes out through an extremely narrow passage, and the mother does not suffer unduly. So blessed be He Who is the best Creator!
THE
MESSAGE
Obsessed
with ‘Hate and Kill’-Phobia
Prepared by Jamiatul Ulama, Tel: +27 (0) 11 373 8000. www.jamiat.co.za
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As we enter another new year, it becomes critically important for us as Muslims
to understand, defend and promote the Qur'ânic concept of mutual co-existence
across the racial and religious divide. Important because the offensive cartoons,
the remarks by the Pope and the recent documentary entitled: “Obsessions”
project Muslims to be people filled with hate, contempt and intolerance. Muslims
are stereotyped as bearded fanatics with swords in their hands ready to kill
every infidel on earth. Terms such as “extremists”, “moderates”
and “terrorists” have been strategically used to profile Muslims
and sow discord among them.
Wayne Kopping producer of “Obsession” expands this fallacy by saying: The Qur'ânic term for inviting people to Islam is , which means, literally, “invitation.” The term itself means that the invitee has the right to accept or reject that “invitation.” Any kind of compulsion or coercion is clearly inconsistent with the notion of “invitation.” If people reject the invitation, the Qur'ân does not prescribe any legal punishment in this world.
Whilst the Qur'ân makes it a duty on believers to communicate the message of Islam to fellow humans it does not impose Islam onto them: “If it were true that the Qur'ân instructs that every non-Muslim should be killed because of his or her religion, then what would explain the fact that religious minorities through 1,400 years of Muslim history not only survived, but also thrived and found freedom to practice their faiths under Muslim rule? Why would the Qur'ân at the same time condone a Muslim man's marriage to a Christian or a Jewish woman during the early era of Islam?
The following verse of the Holy Qur'ân lays down the median between
the two extremes:
The first of these two verses not only calls for fairness and justice when
dealing with non Muslimîn who are neither at war nor are they hostile
towards Muslims, but also urges Muslims to be kind to them. The word “goodness”
[birr] is a comprehensive term signifying kindness, respect, compassion and
generosity, the very term used for the kind treatment of parents. Under normal
peaceful conditions Muslims are obliged to deal with non Muslims on the basis
of [compassion] and [justice].
The following incidents in the life of Nabî clearly show the respect and dignity accorded to non Muslimîn: “Jâbir says: “A bier was passing and Nabî stood up. We also got up with him and said: “This is the janazah of a Jewess”. He said: “Death is a terrible experience, when you see a janazah stand up” (Bukharî & Muslim)
This was a token of respect and condolence extended to members of the bereaved family even though they were non Muslimîn. Even when Muslims were in a position of strength in an Islamic State, non-Muslimîn were accorded the protection and dignity of their persons and possessions as 'Dhimmis'. Nabî has said: “He who hurts a Dhimmi, hurts me, and he who hurts me annoys Allah” (Tabarani)
“Allah is not kind to one who is not kind to fellow men” (Bukharî & Muslim) Abû Hurairah says: “Nabî was once told to curse the . He replied: “I have not been sent to curse but rather as a mercy” (Muslim)
During his reign, Ali was walking in the market place when he saw a Jew in possession of a shield that had been stolen from him. Ali approached the Jew who refused to give it back. Ali petitioned the court for relief. The Muslim judge of Kufa at the time was Shuraih, who had been appointed by Ali himself. Ali requested Shuraih to settle the dispute between them. Shuraih passed judgment in favour of the Jew since Ali could not produce two competent witnesses. Ali lost the case. He turned to the Jew, saying: "You may keep the shield." The Jew responded thus: "The Amîrul Muminîn brought me to a Muslim judge and he is pleased with the judgment passed against him! You have spoken the truth, O Ali. The shield was yours all along. I had picked it up one day after you dropped it. I declare that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger."
Obviously in times of hostility and warfare there can be question of peaceful co-existence with the enemy. Under those circumstances the Qur'ân is very clear: “You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day loving those who oppose Allah and His messenger, even though they may be their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their family…” (58:22) May Allah grant us the ability to understand, defend and promote the authentic teachings of Islam!
DUA (PRAYER)
TO BE READ AT THE MAYYIT
ALLAHUMMA IGHFIR WAR FA’ DARAJATAHU FIL MAHDEYEEN WAKHLUFHU FEE AQIBIHI
FIL GHAUBIREEN WAGH FIR LANAA WALAHU YAA RABBAL AALEMEEN WAF SAH LAHU FEE
QABRIHI WA NAWWIR LAHOO FEEH.
“O Allah! Forgive, raise his stage amongst the rightly guided ie the dwellers of Jannah, and him. O Lord of the worlds! Make spacious his Qabr and grant him light in it.”
BENEFIT: It comes in a Hadith that the person who is by the side of the Mayyit should close the eyes of the Mayyit and read this Dua for Him. The angels say Aameen to his Dua.
THE
STORY
A Masjid goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that
it made no sense to go to Masjid.
"I've gone for 30 years now," he wrote, "and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 Lectures. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the Imams are wasting theirs by giving Lectures at all."
This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher.
"I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to Masjid for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!"
When you are DOWN to nothing... Allah is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank Allah for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!

QUOTE
“Always there is a drop of madness in love, yet always there is a drop
of reason in madness” (F. Nietzshe)
A
THOUGHT
I show up. I listen. I try to laugh. I am a good friend to my spouse. I have
tried to make marriage vows mean what they say. I am a good friend to my friends
and them to me. Without them, there would be nothing to say to you today,
because I would be a cardboard cut out. But I call them on the phone and I
meet them for lunch. I would be rotten, at best mediocre, at my job if those
other things were not true.
THE
SMILE
"An older, white haired man walked into a jewellery store one Friday
evening with his old wife at his side. He told the jeweller he was looking
for a special ring for her. The jeweller looked through his stock and brought
out a R5,000 ring and showed it to him. The
old man said, "I don't think you understand, I want something very
special."
At that statement, the jeweller went to his special stock and brought another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only R40,000," the jeweller said. The old man's wife's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement.
The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it." The jeweller asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, by cheque.
"I know you need to make sure my cheque is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said.
Monday morning, a very teed-off jeweller phoned the old man. "There's no money in that account." "I know", said the old man, "but can you imagine the weekend I had?

NEWS
Two nearly simultaneous bombs struck a predominantly
Shiite commercial area in central Baghdad, killing at least 78 people and
wounding at least 156. The U.S. military reported the deaths of two Marines
in a particularly bloody weekend for American forces in Iraq. The explosions
left body parts strewn on the bloodstained pavement, along with DVDs and
compact discs as black smoke rose into the sky. Iraqi police sealed off
the area as ambulances rushed to the scene to evacuate the victims. Two
U.S. Marines were killed on Sunday in separate attacks in the Anbar province.
The deaths came a day after 25 U.S. troops were killed on Saturday in the
third-deadliest day since the war started in March 2003.
European
Union foreign ministers have vowed strong and effective implementation of
United Nations sanctions on Iran following Teheran's refusal to end its
controversial uranium enrichment programme. A statement released by the
27-nation bloc said EU governments would prevent trade in sensitive nuclear
technology with Iran. In addition, the EU promised to implement a ban on
transactions with and freeze the assets of individuals and entities linked
to the nuclear programme. The statement said the measures would be taken
"without delay" but could be reviewed following a report by the
International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
US plans to set up an anti-missile system in the Czech Republic are "a clear threat" to Russia. A Russian general Vladimir Popovkin, who commands a division of the Russian army in charge of space technology, rejected US claims that the system, which US officials have said could be split between the Czech Republic and Poland, is aimed at warding off attack from North Korea or Iran. The new defence system would include 10 interceptor missiles and a radar.
A 26-man gang of alleged cash-in-transit robbers was denied bail in the Durban Magistrate's Court. They had been "deliberately misleading" and were "not truthful to the court", said magistrate Fariedha Mohamed in finding no exceptional circumstances to warrant the granting of bail. Police arrested 24 of the men at the Mvoti Toll Plaza on the N2 in October last year. It later emerged that at least seven of them were out on bail for other offences, including hijacking. Mohamed said the men's claim that they did not know each other had been disproved by the discovery of their fingerprints "all over" the vehicles seized at the time of their arrest.
The Freedom Front Plus intends opposing an African National Congress plan for massive resettlement in Tshwane. FF Plus Tshwane councillor Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg claimed the ANC wanted to build 212,000 low cost houses on every council-owned park and piece of open land in Pretoria and Centurion in the next five years. Jansen van Rensburg said that, according to a report to be made to the council on the plan, "the eradication of the legacy of apartheid" was its primary driving force.
