THE MESSAGE
MUHARRAM & SPENDING FREELY ON ONE'S FAMILY
---------------------------------------------------------

Besides fasting on the day of Aashooraa, being generous to one's family and spending on what is normally spent on food, etc. is a very meritorious act. Allama Sakhawi (Radhiallahu-anhu) writes: "He who will be generous on his family on the Day of Aashooraa, Allah will be generous to him throughout the year." This Hadith has been transmitted by Tabrani and Baihaqi in his book "As-Shaub" and Fadaail-ul-Awqaat.

The virtues of fasting ‘Aashooraa’ (10th Muharram)
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of ‘Aashooraa’, and this month, meaning Ramadhaan.” (Reported by al-Bukhari, 1867).

The meaning of his being keen was that he intended to fast on that day in the hope of earning the reward for doing so. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “For fasting the day of ‘Aashooraa’, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” (Reported by Muslim, 1976). This is from the bounty of Allah towards us: for fasting one day He gives us expiation for the sins of a whole year. And Allah is the Owner of Great Bounty.

Which day is ‘Aashooraa’?
Al-Nawawi RA said: “Aashooraa’ and Taasoo’aa’ are two elongated names [the vowels are elongated] as is stated in books on the Arabic language. ‘Aashooraa’ is the tenth day of Muharram and Taasoo’aa’ is the ninth day. ‘Ataa’ RA reported that Rasulullah SAW said, ‘Fast the ninth and the tenth.’ On this basis it is Mustahab (encouraged) to fast on the ninth and the tenth.

Ruling on fasting only on the day of ‘Aashooraa’
“Fasting on the day of ‘Aashoraa’ is expiation for a year, and it is not Makrooh to fast only that day…” (al-Fataawa al-Kubra, part 5). In Tuhfat al-Muhtaaj by Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, it says: “There is nothing wrong with fasting only on ‘Aashooraa’.” (Part 3, Baab Sawm al-Tatawwu’). This ruling only applies if there is a valid Shari eason.

Fasting ‘Aashooraa’ – for what does it offer expiation?
Imaam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It expiates for all minor sins, i.e., it brings forgiveness of all sins except major sins.” Then he said (may Allah have mercy on him): “Fasting the day of ‘Arafah expiates for two years, and the day of ‘Aashooraa’ expiates for one year. If when a person says ‘Aameen’ it coincides with the ‘Aameen’ of the angels, he will be forgiven all his previous sins… Each one of the things that we have mentioned will bring expiation. If there are minor sins for which expiation is needed, expiation for them will be accepted; if there are no minor sins or major sins, good deeds will be added to his account and he will be raised in status… If he had committed major sins but no minor sins, we hope that his major sins will be reduced.” (al-Majmoo’ Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, part 6, Sawm Yawm ‘Arafaah).

The Day of Aashooraa is a great day. While observing its greatness, let us shun all innovations and unfounded customs which deprive us of blessings and reward. Let us firmly cling onto the Qur’an and Sunnah and attain success of both the worlds. Ameen.

DUA (PRAYER)
What to Say when you wear something new

The Messenger of Allah was such that if he newly acquired clothing he would name it by its name: either shirt, or turban, then, he would say: 'Allãhumma laka 'Al-hamdu 'anta kasawtaneehi 'as'aluka min khayrihi wa khayra mã suni`a, wa 'a`outhu bika min sharrihi wa sharri mã suni`a lahu O my 'ilãh to You is all praise, You have clothed it upon me. I ask You the good of it, and the good it was made for; and I seek refuge in You from the evil of it, and the evil it was made for.

THE STORY
A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. The conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups -- porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain-looking, some expensive and some exquisite -- telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

After all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, THAT is the source of your problems and stress."

"Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases, it's just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and then began eyeing each other's cups."

"Now consider this: Life is the coffee… and the jobs, houses, cars, things, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define nor change the quality of life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee Allah has provided us. Allah brews the coffee, not the cups. Enjoy your coffee!!!

RECIPE
NUT DATE BAR
Ingredients

¼ cup melted margarine - ¾ cup sugar - 3 eggs - ¾ to 1 cup nuts - ¾ cup flour - ¼ tsp salt - 1 tsp baking powder - 1 ½ cups cut up dates.

Method
Beat margarine and sugar until creamy. Add the eggs (one at a time). Add nuts and dates. Lastly add flour and baking powder. Bake in an oblong pan for 15/20 mins. When cooled spread chocolate and coconut on top. Cut into squares.

COOKING TIP
To sauté food, quickly cook in a small amount of oil over direct heat.

A THOUGHT
You are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you. And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an email. Write a letter. Get a life in which you are generous. And realize that life is the best thing ever, and that you have no business taking it for granted. Care so deeply about its goodness that you want to spread it around.

THE SMILE
Mother had decided to trim her household budget wherever possible, so instead of having a dress dry-cleaned she washed it by hand. Proud of her savings, she boasted to my father, "Just think, Fred, we are five dollars richer because I washed this dress by hand."
"Good," my dad quickly replied. "Wash it again!"
