HADITH,
SAYINGS/TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
Abu Hurayrah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (PBUH)
said, "One who strives to help the widows and the poor is like the one
who fights in the way of Allah.'' The narrator said: I think that he (PBUH)
added also: "I shall regard him as the one who stands up (for prayer)
without rest and as the one who observes fasts continuously". [Al-Bukhari
and Muslim]
Commentary: Here the words `widow' and `poor' have been mentioned for example only while they cover the whole range of indigent, invalid and needy people. Efforts for their care support and welfare has been regarded equivalent to Jihad. Islam has done full justice in supporting the helpless individuals and the entire poor class of the society by elevating the status of those who undertake this noble task to the level of Mujahidun.
It makes it clear that worship is not restricted to prayers and fasting only but also covers every good deed. Thus, those who are always mindful of the weak and the poor and constantly strive for their welfare are engaged in perpetual worship.
THE
MESSAGE
The Virtue of observing more Nafl (optional) fasts during Muharram
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of
Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘The best of
fasting after Ramadhaan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram.’
(reported by Muslim, 1982).
The phrase “Allah’s month”, connecting the name of the month to the name of Allah in a genitive grammatical structure, signifies the importance of the month. Al-Qaari said: “The apparent meaning is all of the month of Muharram.” But it was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never fasted any whole month apart from Ramadan, so this Hadith is probably meant to encourage increasing one’s fasting during Muharram, without meaning that one should fast for the entire month.
Fasting
on ‘Aashooraa’ (10th of Muharram)
‘Aashooraa’ in History
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah and saw the Jews
fasting on the day of ‘Aashooraa’. He said, ‘What is this?’
They said, ‘This is a righteous day, it is the day when Allah saved
the Children of Israel from their enemies, so Moosa fasted on this day.’
He said, ‘We have more right to Moosa than you,’ so he fasted
on that day and commanded [the Muslims] to fast on that day.” (Reported
by al-Bukhaari, 1865).
“This is a righteous day” – in a report narrated by Muslim, [the Jews said:] “This is a great day, on which Allah saved Moosa and his people, and drowned Pharaoh and his people.” “Moosa fasted on this day” – a report narrated by Muslim adds: “… in thanksgiving to Allah, so we fast on this day.” According to a report narrated by al-Bukhari: “… so we fast on this day to venerate it.” A version narrated by Imam Ahmad adds: “This is the day on which the Ark settled on Mount Joodi, so Nooh fasted this day in thanksgiving.”
The practice of fasting on ‘Aashooraa’ was known even in the days of Jaahiliyyah, before the Prophet’s mission. It was reported that ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “The people of Jaahiliyyah used to fast on that day…” Al-Qurtubi said: “Perhaps Quraysh used to fast on that day on the basis of some past law, such as that of Ibrahim AS.
Fasting on ‘Aashooraa’ was a gradual step in the process of introducing fasting as a prescribed obligation in Islam. Fasting appeared in three forms. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah, he told the Muslims to fast on three days of every month and on the day of ‘Aashooraa’, then Allah made fasting obligatory when He said (interpretation of the meaning): “… observing the fasting is prescribed for you…” [al-Baqarah 2:183] (Ahkaam al-Qur’aan by al-Jassas, part 1).
The obligation was transferred from the fast of ‘Aashooraa’ to the fast of Ramadhaan. It was reported from Ibn Mas’ood that when fasting in Ramadhaan was made obligatory, the obligation to fast ‘Aashooraa’ was lifted, i.e., it was no longer obligatory to fast on this day, but it is still desirable (mustahabb).
DUA/PRAYER
It is reported of the Prophet that if he saw something he liked he would say
'Al-hamdu lil-lãhi 'allathee bini`matihi tatimmus-sãlihãtu,
and if he saw something he disliked he would say, 'Al-hamdu lil-lãhi
'alã kulli hãlin.

A
THOUGHT
People don't talk about the soul very much anymore. It's so much easier to
write a resume than to craft a spirit. You cannot be really first rate at
your work if your work is all you are. So here's what I wanted to tell you
today: Get a life. A real life, not a manic pursuit of the next promotion,
the bigger pay cheque, the larger house.
Get a life in which you notice the smell of salt water pushing itself on a breeze at the seaside, a life in which you stop and watch how a red-tailed hawk circles over the water, or the way a baby scowls with concentration when she tries to pick up a sweet with her thumb and first finger.
THE
SMILE
Three boys are in the schoolyard bragging of how great their fathers are...
The first one says: "Well, my father runs the fastest. He can fire an
arrow, and start to run, I tell you, and he gets there before the arrow".
The second one says: "Ha! You think that's fast! My father is a hunter.
He can shoot his gun and be there before the bullet".
The third one listens to the other two and shakes his head. He then says:
"You two know nothing about fast. My father is a civil servant. He stops
working at 4:30 and he is home by 3:45!!"

local commander of the Islamic Jihad group died during an Israeli military
operation in the West Bank town of Tulkarem. Israeli troops shot Fadel Balawneh

from the bullet wounds or the fall.
Afghanistan's heroin-producing poppies will not be sprayed with herbicide this year despite a record crop in 2006 and U.S. pressure to allow the drug-fighting tactic. President Hamid Karzai's Cabinet decided to hold off on using chemicals for now, said Said Mohammad Azam, spokesman for Afghanistan's Ministry of Counter Narcotics. Azam said there would be an increased effort to destroy poppy crops with "traditional" techniques - typically sending teams of laborers into fields to batter down or plow in the plants before they can be harvested.
Kenyan authorities have arrested five people, including a US and a French national suspected to be fighters from Somali's vanquished Islamic movement. A senior police official said a joint security team arrested the men at a border crossing near the Kenyan coastal town of Lamu. The suspects, who were also in possession of three AK-47 rifles, included two with Syrian passports and a third with a Tunisian passport. The suspects were handed over to the country's anti-terrorism police to carry out more investigations.
The United States is expected this week to place the two South African Muslims on its list of Al Qaeda suspects and will freeze their assets, diplomats in South Africa said. The United States is also pushing to have Junaid Ismail Dockrat and Farhad Ahmed Dockrat, his cousin, placed on a United Nations list of suspects tied to Osama bin Laden's group as well as Afghanistan's Taliban. "Their names will be listed with the (US) Treasury department soon," one of the diplomats said. The US government maintains that fundraising and recruiting by the group has become a serious worry in South Africa.
President Thabo Mbeki awarded 18 of South Africa's top matric students the Thabo Mbeki Matric Merit Awards in Pretoria. Education Minister Naledi Pandor urged the students to continue their hard work and advised them to "watch out for the parties and alcohol". Other dignitaries who attended the award ceremony included Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, Free State premier Beatrice Marshoff and Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. All 18 students received 3G cards from Vodacom and laptop computers from Lenovo.
