HADITH, SAYINGS/TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
A’ishah RA reported: A poor woman came to me carrying her two daughters. I gave her three date-fruits. She gave a date to each of them and then she took up one date-fruit and brought that to her mouth to eat, but her daughters asked her that also. She then divided between them the date-fruit that she intended to eat. This (kind) treatment of her impressed me and I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) who said, 'Verily, Allah has assured Jannah for her, because of (this act) of her,'' or said, "He (SWT) has rescued her from Hell-Fire". [Muslim]

Commentary: Besides great merit of the upbringing of daughters, this Hadith also tells us that if a wife has secured general permission from her husband about Sadaqah (alms and charity) she can offer Sadaqah, and its reward will be given to both of them. The former will be entitled to it for paying it, while the latter will be eligible to it for giving his consent to it.

THE MESSAGE
Zakah
By Dr Saniyasnain Khan
---------------------------

Zakah is the fourth ‘pillar’ of Islam. Zakah means setting apart for Allah every year a certain portion of one’s savings and wealth (generally 2.5 percent) and spending it upon religious duties and on needy members of the community. The fulfillment of this duty is, in fact, a kind of reminder that all one has is in trust for Allah. We should, therefore, hold nothing back from Allah. To whatever one may amass in one’s lifetime, one’s own personal contribution is insignificant.

If the Supreme Being, who is at work in the heavens and on the earth, refused to co-operate with man, there would be nothing that the latter could accomplish single-handed. He would not be able to plant so much as a single seed to make things grow. Nor could he set up any industries, or carry out any other such enterprise. If Allah were to withdraw any one of His material blessings, all our plans would go awry, and all our efforts would be brought to naught.

Zakah is the practical recognition of this fact through the expenditure of money. Islam requires one to consider his personal wealth as belonging to Allah and, therefore, to set apart a portion for Him. No maximum limit has been prescribed, but a minimum limit has definitely been fixed. According to statutory Zakah, each individual must abide by this and spend a fixed minimum percentage of his wealth every year in the way prescribed by Allah. In so spending his wealth, he is permitted neither to belittle the recipient nor to make him feel obliged or grateful to himself. His wealth must be given to the needy in the spirit of its being a trust from Allah which he is making over to the genuine title-holders. He should feed others so that he himself is fed in the Hereafter, and he should give to others so that he himself is not denied succor by Allah in the next world.

Zakah is a symbol of one’s obligation to recognize the rights of others and to be in sympathy with them in pain or in sorrow. These sentiments should become so deep-rooted that one begins to regard one’s own wealth as belonging, in part, to others. Moreover, one should render service to others without expecting either recognition or recompense. Each individual should protect the honor of others without hope of any gain in return. He should be the well-wisher of not just friends and relations, but of all members of society. Zakah, first and foremost, makes it plain to people that their entire ‘possessions’ are gifts of Allah, and, secondly, dissuades the servants of Allah from living in society as unfeeling and selfish creatures. Indeed, throughout their entire lives, they must set aside some portion for others.

On the legalistic plane, Zakah is an annual tax, or duty, in essence and spirit: it is recognition on our part of the share which Allah, and others, have in our wealth.

PERSONALITY
Abu Hurayrah RA

"An Abi Hurayrata, radiyallahu anhu, qal.' qala rasul Allahi, sallallahu alayhi wa sailam..."

Through this phrase millions of Muslims from the early history of Islam to the present have come to be familiar with the name Abu Hurayrah. In speeches and lectures, in Friday Khutbahs and seminars, in the books of Hadith and Seerah, Fiqh and Ibaadah, the name Abu Hurayrah is mentioned.

Through his Prodigious efforts, hundreds of Hadith or sayings of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam were transmitted to later generations. His is the foremost name in the roll of Hadith transmitters. Abu Hurayrah became a Muslim at the hands of at-Tufayl ibn Amr the chieftain of the Daws tribe to which he belonged. The Daws lived in the region of Tihamah which stretches along the coast of the Red Sea in southern Arabia. When at-Tufayl returned to his village after meeting the Prophet and becoming a Muslim in the early years of his mission, Abu Hurayrah was one of the first to respond to his call. He was unlike the majority of the Daws who remained stubborn in their old beliefs for a long time.

Abu Hurayrah stayed in Tihamah for several years and it was only at the beginning of the seventh year of the Hajra that he arrived in Madinah with others of his tribe. The Prophet had gone on a campaign to Khaibar. Being destitute, Abu Hurayrah took up his place in the Masjid with other of the Ahl as-Suffah.

Abu Hurayrah loved the Prophet a great deal and found favour with him. He was never tired of looking at the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam whose face appeared to him as having all the radiance of the sun and he was never tired of listening to him. Abu Hurayrah RA set out to memorize in the four years that he spent with the Prophet, the gems of wisdom that emanated from his lips. He realized that he had a great gift and he set about to use it to the full in the service of Islam.

He had free time at his disposal. Unlike many of the Muhaajirin he did not busy himself' in the market-places, with buying and selling. Unlike many of the Ansaar, he had neither land to cultivate nor crops to tend. He stayed with the Prophet in Madinah and went with him on journeys and expeditions. Many companions were amazed at the number of Hadith he had memorized and often questioned him on when he had heard a certain Hadith and under what circumstances.

Abu Hurayrah underwent much hardship and difficulties as a result of his dedicated search for knowledge. He was often hungry and destitute. Much of Abu Hurayrah’s time would be spent in spiritual exercises and devotion to Allah. Qiyam al-Layl staying up for the night in prayer and devotion - was a regular practice of his family including his wife and his daughter. He would stay up for a third of the night, his wife for another third and his daughter for a third. In this way, in the house of Abu Hurayrah no hour of the night would pass without Ibaadah, Dhikr and Salaah.

We owe a debt of gratitude to Abu Hurayrah RA for helping to preserve and transmit the valuable legacy of the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. He died in the year 59 AH when he was seventy-eight years old.

A THOUGHT
Man should be as dead before the commands of Allah lest a blow befall him from the Lord of all creatures. True; but though trust be our mainstay, yet the Prophet teaches us to have regard to means. The Prophet cried with a loud voice, 'trust in Allah, and yet tie the camel's leg.' Hear the adage, 'The worker is the friend of Allah.' Through trust in Providence neglect not to use means.

THE SMILE
Mari living in Tongaat was looking for a decent woman to marry so he's parents took him one Sunday looking for a bride.

The 1st woman he met was not suitable because of all the different prayers they undertook.

So they went to Phoenix, this woman, he did not like as well cos they kept too many fasts for the week.

Then they went to Chatsworth, they met this young lady who greeted them and offered them tea on arrival. She served them tea and biscuits, when Mari saw this he lit up and told his mother that this was the woman he wants to marry.

His mom asked why so sudden and he replied:

"Look Ma! They served us tea and biscuits with my name on it.
