FUNERALS - MAYYITS

HADITH, SAYINGS/TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
Anas RA reported: The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said, "Whoever supports two girls till they attain maturity, he and I will come on the Day of Resurrection like this". Messenger of Allah (PBUH) joined his fingers illustrating this. [Muslim]

Commentary: In the pre-Islamic era, Arabs were greatly dejected and showed resentment on the birth of a daughter, which in fact reflected the status of women in society, In order to give them their rightful place in the society, Islam taught its followers to recognize their legitimate rights. Among the injunctions which were issued in this behalf, the most important was that their proper upbringing, education and training were made a means to attain Jannah so that people did not only feel joy over the birth of sons but also felt pleasure on the birth of daughters.

In this respect, Islam is the first religion which has not only ensured protection of women’s rights but also made full arrangements for their respect and prestige in society. For instance, women have been prohibited from having close contacts with men and for this purpose restriction of the veil has been imposed on them. It is a curse indeed that due to intellectual immaturity and evil trends, this ‘freedom of women’, which has disgraced and robbed women of the virtues of a chaste life, is liked by many people and they are trying that Muslim women should also imitate the style of western women.

THE MESSAGE
Salaah, a regular means of purifying both body and soul
Dr Farida Khanam
-------------------

There is no word in English to translate Salaah. It is not merely "prayer" in the limited sense of turning to Allah in supplication. The Arabic word for supplication is Dua.

Salaah is performed in a prescribed form. It is preceded by ablutions (Wudhu). The five set prayers have special names and are performed at special times — between dawn and sunrise (Fajr) early after noon (Zuhr), mid-afternoon (‘Asr) sunset (Maghrib) and night (‘Isha’).

Salaah needs to be performed on time. It should not be delayed deliberately. Salaah consists of units or Rakaahs. Each Rakaah consists of the pronouncement of Allahu Akbar (God is Most Great), of the Opening Surah of the Qur’an, of praising and glorifying Allah. All words in the Salaah are always recited in Arabic.

Salaah consists of precise bodily postures — standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting. The posture of Salaah is an indication of one’s relation to one’s Creator — a relation of reverence submission and gratitude.

Salaah sharpens our moral sense. It keeps us from indecent, shameful activities. This is stated in the Qur’an: "Salaah indeed prevents a person from indecency and evil." (29:45).

Salaah is a regular means of purifying both body and soul. The ablution before the Prayer with fresh water acts as a refresher and cleanser. The Salaah if properly performed purifies the soul of arrogance and hypocrisy. The Prophet, peace be on him, likened a person who regularly performed Salaah to a person who washes himself regularly in a stream of clean running water five times a day.

Salaah thus serves as training in cleanliness, purity and punctuality. Salaah brings mental satisfaction and emotional fulfillment.

DUA/PRAYER
ALLAHUMMA INNY AOOTHUBIKA MINAL KASLI WAL HARAMI WA SOOIL KIBARI WA FITNATIT DUNYA WA ATHAABIL QABR.

O Allah! I seek your protection from laziness; the weakness of old-age; the evils of old-age; from the mischief of the world and from the punishment of the grave.

HANDY HINT
To prevent accumulating dirt under your fingernails while you work in the garden, draw your fingernails across a bar of soap and you'll effectively seal the undersides of your nails so dirt can't collect beneath them. Then, after you've finished in the garden, use a nailbrush to remove the soap and your nails will be sparkling clean.

RECIPE
WHOLEMEAL & YOGHURT SCONES
Ingredients

1 cup flour - 1 cup whole meal flour - 3 tsps baking powder - ½ tsp salt - 250gr unsweetened yoghurt plain - 60grm butter - ¼ cup water - Milk to glaze.

Method
Sift flours, baking powder and salt into a bowl - returning husks from the sieve to the flours in the bowl. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients. Add yoghurt to dry ingredients. Melt butter and add butter and water to the bowl, mix quickly to soft dough with a knife. Transfer mixture to a lightly floured surface and knead lightly. Roll or pat dough out to 3.5cm thickness. Using a 5cm scone cutter cut out rounds and place on an oven tray. Brush tops lightly with milk and bake at 220c for 20 minutes or until golden.

A THOUGHT
Who can describe the unique work of grace? Sometimes it presents one appearance, sometimes another. So is religion, it becomes confusing when one turns one's back on Allah. But when one is drowned and absorbed in Him one recognizes His Grace. Watch the face of each one. There are many demons with human’s faces, it is wrong to join hands with each one.

THE SMILE
A concerned husband went to a doctor to talk about his wife. "Doctor, I think my wife is deaf because she never hears me the first time and always asks me to repeat things."

"Well," the doctor replied, "go home and tonight stand about 15 feet from her and say something to her. If she doesn't reply move about 5 feet closer and say it again. Keep doing this so that we'll get an idea about the severity of her deafness."

Sure enough, the husband goes home and does exactly as instructed. He starts off about 15 feet from his wife in the kitchen as she is chopping some vegetables and says, "Honey, what's for dinner?" He hears no response. He moves about 5 feet closer and asks again. No reply. He moves 5 feet closer. Still no reply. He gets fed up and moves right behind her, about an inch away, and asks again, "Honey, what's for dinner?"

She replies, "For the fourth time, vegetable stew!"

NEWS
Dozens of Palestinian youths protested in East Jerusalem as Israeli authorities began renovation work outside the Old City's disputed Temple Mount/Harem al-Sharif compound. Israel aims to build a new walkway from the Wailing Wall Plaza at the foot of the Temple Mount to the elevated compound housing the al-Aqsa Masjid. The walkway is to replace a previous one which collapsed in 2004 due to rain, snow and a minor earthquake. Since then, a temporary wooden bridge had been in place. Palestinian leaders called on Muslims to flock to the area to protest the move, which they claim is an attempt to "destroy" the al-Aqsa Masjid.

Ministers and top officials from more than 50 countries signed a new international treaty banning forced disappearances, capping a quarter-century of efforts by families of those who vanished at the hands of governments. The treaty also bars governments from holding people in secret detention. The United States, which is accused of sending terrorist suspects to secret prisons overseas, opposed an early draft of the treaty and was not expected to sign the convention.

Corrections Services Minister Ngconde Balfour has ordered a medical specialist to ascertain whether convicted businessman Schabir Shaiks's stay at a Durban hospital was absolutely necessary. Media speculated last month that Shaik had spent more than R500 000 on his stay at Durban's St Augustine's Hospital. Speculation has been rife that Shaik has received preferential treatment. Shaik apparently suffers from an unstable blood pressure and hypertension. His family said he suffered a mild stroke shortly after he was admitted to St Augustine's.

Zimbabwe says it will arrest white farmers who fail to meet a weekend deadline to vacate their land for newly resettled black farmers. State Security Minister Didymus Mutasa, who is also in charge of land reform, said authorities are gathering information on which farmers had left and who had refused to do so. Under the government's Gazetted Farms (Consequential Provisions) Act, the white farmers concerned had until last Saturday to vacate their properties. The main white farmer representative body, the Commercial Farmers Union, advised its members at the weekend to defy the directive to move out. It said arrests were the only way their case could be heard.

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has requested an investigation by the research ethics council following concerns about the health of participants in microbicide clinical trials. In a statement released, Tshabalala-Msimang said she had met with researchers following "disturbing news" about preliminary results of a study conducted among 604 women in KwaZulu-Natal. The purpose of the trials was to test the effectiveness of a vaginal microbicide -- cellulose sulphate gel -- in preventing the sexual transmission of HIV. Tshabalala-Msimang said she would request the investigation to establish whether the research followed the protocols approved by the Medicine Control Council and the ethics committees of the relevant research institutions.
