UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AN
Surah Abas (Frowning) CONCLUSION
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE BENEFICIENT THE MOST MERCIFUL

[37] Many faces, on that day, will be bright,
[38] laughing, rejoicing,
[39] and many faces, on that day, will be stained with dust,
[40] covered by darkness.
[41] Those are the disbelievers, the nefarious.

COMMENTARY: Even if one sees the other in front of him, he will turn away from him. They will try to flee from their brothers, from their mothers and fathers, from their spouses and their children. They will not be able to help any of them in the Hereafter, despite the natural attachment they had with them in the world. Normally, one is more anxious in this world about his parents than about his brothers, and he is more anxious about his wife and children than about his parents. Keeping this in view, the relationships, in the present verse, are arranged from lower order to higher order.

The Chapter ends on a note of warning that if we reject the Qur'anic message and persist in opposition to the Noble Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam they will have to face a day of reckoning when misery, shame and ignominy will be their lot. The righteous believers, however, will reside in Gardens of Bliss, their faces beaming with joy and happiness.

THE MESSAGE
A Life of Piety
---------------
We often regard the urge to sin to be contrary to piety. We often remain in complete anxiety due to these urges. Shaytaan misleads us by saying that a person can never become a saint if he has these urges. How many ignorant ones have not been able to differentiate between the urge to sin and sin itself? Due to this, we lose all hope, fulfill our urges and become deprived of the proximity of the Creator.

It is harmful to act on these urges. Had there not been any urge to sin, no one would have been pious because the meaning of Taqwa (piety) is to curb and control the carnal self from fulfilling an illegal urge. Therefore, Taqwa (piety) is dependent on the substance of sin, namely the urge to commit wrong. The existence of these urges is essential for Taqwa. One should not be perturbed by these urges at all. One should not fulfill these urges.

The substance of sin is of two types: status and sexual sins. If we do not act on these urges, we will obtain the proximity of Allah Insha Allah! An easy method of obtaining this proximity is to be in the company of good people.

We have the ability to sin as well as to be pious. We have a choice of accepting the slavery of the Nafs and preparing our way to hell or we could muster some courage, become pious and thereby become a friend of Allah. We could either become Abdur Rahmân (the servant of the Merciful) or Abdus Shaytaan (the slave of Satan). Allah has granted us a choice to either adopt the path of piety or the path of sin. Retribution and punishment will be based on this choice.

Allah mentions Taqwa (piety) after mentioning sin. Normally a good thing is mentioned first. When you enter the Masjid/Place of Worship, you step in with the right foot first. You eat with the right hand. Every good thing is placed first but Allah mentions sin first. This is the hidden secret. If it is discovered, then one will not be grieved by the urge to sin. The urge to sin is not harmful. Fulfilling the urge is however sinful. If you do not have the urge to sin, you cannot become pious.

DUA (PRAYER)
WHEN LEAVING A MEETING
SUBHAANALLAH WA BIHAMDIH SUBHAANAKALLAHUMMA WA BIHAMDIK ASH HADU ALLAA ILAAHA ILLA ANTA ASTAGHFIRUKA WA ATOOBU ILAYK. Allah is Pure. All praise is only due to Him. O Allah! I proclaim Your Purity with Your praises. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship besides You. I seek forgiveness from thee and I turn repentant to Thee.

BUBBLEGUM DISASTER
There was once a boy called Imraan who loved bubblegum. His mother would get irritated because he was always chewing gum. She said that it reminded her of a cow and that it was not a healthy habit. She always told him to throw the bubblegum into the bin. He was not to leave it lying around or to throw it on the floor, even if he was outside.

Now one day, something terrible happened when his mother’s friend came to visit with her two year old daughter. His mother and her friend soon got busy trying out a new biscuit recipe. Imraan was feeling sleepy and went to his room to take a nap.

While he was sleeping the little girl entered the room. She saw some bubblegum lying near his bedside and decided to help herself. She tore one open and began to chew it. Then she opened all the other gum as well and tore the wrappers into tiny bits and pieces. By now her chewing gum was tasteless so she looked for a place to throw it. She stretched the gum and mischievously stuck it on the sleeping boy’s hair.

Imraan was too fast asleep to feel anything. Just then the girl’s mother called her. As she walked into the kitchen, her mother asked her what she had been up to. She replied that she had been playing. Shortly thereafter they left.

When Imraan awoke he was upset to find all the mess in his room. He became angrier when he noticed the gum in his hair. He tried very hard to remove it but failed. He went and complained to his mother who tried her best to remove it. All would not come out. There was only one thing left to do and that was to send him to the barber. Imraan had to have his head shaved to remove all the traces of bubblegum

He now makes sure that he never leaves bubblegum lying around. In fact, he has lost his love for bubblegum and seldom eats it.

RECIPE
STRAWBERRY DESERT
Ingredients
1 Box strawberry Jelly - 1 tin fresh cream - 1 tub strawberry yoghurt - 4 tblsp condensed milk.

Method
Boil 500ml water in a pot. Pour jelly mixture in boiling water. Wait till jelly sets. Beat fresh cream until stiff. Add yoghurt and condensed milk to the cream. When the jelly is set, put the fresh cream mixture on top. Allow to set in the fridge.

COOKING TIP
While making dosas or chapattis pour oil 1 inch inside the outer border of the dosa or chapatti so that the oil does not flow out and spoil the non stick coating.

Abu Bakr al-Maruthi said: I visited Ahmad ibn Hanbal one morning and said to him: "How are you?" He answered: "How could one be okay when one’s Rabb (Lord) requires one to perform his duties, when one’s Prophet requires one to follow the Sunnah, the two angels require that one rectifies his deeds, the human self requires to follow its desires, Satan requires to commit evil deeds, the angel of death requires to give one’s life and the children require to satisfy their needs?"

THE SMILE
"Yesterday I answered a knock on the door, only to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner.

"Good morning," said the young man. "If I could take a couple of minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners."
"Go away!" I said. "I haven't got any money!", "I'm broke!" and proceeded to close the door.

Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed wide open. "Don't be too hasty!" he said. "Not until you have at least seen my demonstration." And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure on to my hallway carpet.

"If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder."

I stepped back and said, "Well I hope you've got a good appetite, because they cut off my electricity this morning. Hehehe!!!
