UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AN
SURAH ABAS CONTINUED…
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICIENT THE MOST MERCIFUL

[21] Thereafter, when He will intend, He will raise him up.
[22] No! He has not yet fulfilled what He (Allah) had commanded him.
[23] So, let the man look to his food,
[24] How well we poured water,
[25] Then how nicely we split the earth,
[26] Then we grew in it grain,
[27] And grapes and greens,
[28] And olive and date-palms,
[29] And gardens, full of thick trees,
[30] And fruits and fodder,
[31] As a benefit for you and your cattle.

COMMENTARY: Having mentioned the beginning and the end of human life, the current verses warn the non-believing people to carefully ponder and believe in Allah, and comply with His injunctions.

The Divine favours are mentioned. The favours that Allah had conferred upon us between the beginning and ending part of our lives. Allah asks us to consider the sources of our food. Allah showers down water abundantly from the clouds. He cleaves the earth with new growth. Thereupon He causes grain to grow out of it. At first, a fragile shoot germinates and sprouts. Then many different kinds of grain, fruits and gardens come into existence. Having warned us several times about these Divine blessings, the Surah concludes with the mention of Resurrection.

THE MESSAGE
Forming the household

Make a good choice when choosing a spouse - “And marry those among you who are single (i.e., a man who has no wife and a woman who has no husband) and (also marry) the Saulihoon (pious, fit and capable ones). If they be poor, Allah will enrich them out of His Bounty. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knowing (about the state of the people).” [al-Noor 24:32 – interpretation of the meaning].

Just as a righteous spouse is one of the four elements of happiness, so a bad spouse is one of the four elements of misery, as it says in the Hadith meaning: “One of (the elements of) happiness is a righteous spouse, who when you see him/her you feel pleased, and when you are away, you feel that you can trust him/her with regard to your property. And one of (the elements of) misery is a bad spouse who when you see him/her, you feel upset, he/she keeps attacking you verbally, and when you are away, you do not feel that you can trust him/her with regard to your property.”

It is also essential to look at the situation of the prospective husband who is proposing marriage to the woman, and to agree to his proposal in accordance with the following advises:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If there comes to you one with whose religion and character you are pleased, then marry your daughter [or sister, etc.] to him, otherwise there will be Fitnah and great corruption in the land.”

This must be achieved through asking the right questions, verifying facts, gathering information and checking sources, so that the home will not be corrupted or destroyed. The righteous man and righteous woman together will build a righteous home, because “the vegetation of a good land comes forth (easily) by the Permission of its Lord, and that which is bad, brings forth nothing but a little with difficulty…” [al-A’raaf 7:58 – interpretation of the meaning].

DUA (PRAYER)
HA MEEM TANZEELUL KITAABI MINALLAHIL AZEEZIL ALEEM. GHAUFIRITH THAMBY WA QAUBILILT TAUBI SHADEEDIL IQAUBI THIT TAUL LAA ILAAHA ILLAA HUWA ILAYHIL MASEER.

Ha Meem. This book is a revelation from Allah, The Overwhelming; The All Knowing; The Forgiver of sins; The Acceptor of repentance; The Giver of severe repentance; The Giver of severe punishment; The very Powerful. Besides Him there is none worthy of Worship. To Him is our return.

BENEFIT: Whoever reads this in the morning and evening will be saved from all evils.

THE STORY
ESCAPING DISCOMFORT
There was a man who always felt aggravated by his surroundings and who always felt as if people were disturbing his peace of mind. One day he got so fed up with the people that he decided to leave the town and become a cave dwelling hermit. So he settled all of his affairs and retired to a remote mountainside. After searching for many days he finally found a cave suitable for his purposes, and occupied it, saying: "There is no one here and no one knows where I am. I am finally in peace."

Just as he was saying this to himself, someone passed in the valley below, looked up at the mountainside and noticed a very beautiful rock just near that cave. "I must have a piece of that colourful rock", he said to himself, began climbing the mountain and started chiseling away at the rock, tak! tak! tak!

At this the man in the cave became really exasperated and said: "O my Lord, I try to escape from people and You send me this! There are so many mountains, why did you have to send him to this one?

No one can escape discomfort in this life, "There is no rest in this world." You may live in a city or a village, even on the side of a mountain - but all you will discover is that this life is made of unrest. We have been ordered to be patient in the face of this situation, for, "He who is patient ultimately succeeds".

RECIPE
YEAST PURI
4 Cups cake flour - 1 tsp Salt - 1 tsp Sugar - 1 tsp roasted cumin seeds (opt) - Or Green Masala (opt) - ¼ cup Ghee and oil mixed - I pkt instant yeast (10grms) - 1 cup Luke warm milk and water.

METHOD
Sift dry ingredients and rub in Ghee and oil mixture. Add 1 cup lukewarm milk and water to form dough. Rub oil over dough and leave in Tupperware to rise +- 30 mins. Punch dough, roll and shape into puris or different shapes. Fry in moderate oil.

PLEASE NOTE: The dough can be kept in the fridge for approximately 2 days. It can also be rolled and packed in layers on separating sheets in a Tupperware and can be frozen. Fry when necessary.

COOKING TIP
Always crush ice cubes well before putting under an electrical hand mixer for Blending. Using whole cubes, can result in the mixer head breaking and flying to pieces.

A THOUGHT
Sh Saadi writes about 'True Love': A true lover is proven such by his/her pain of heart; no sickness is there like the sickness of the heart. The lover's ailment is different from all ailments; love is the astrolabe (instrument used to observe) Allah's mysteries. A lover may hanker after this love or that love, but at the last he is drawn to the King of love. However much we describe and explain love, when we fall in love we are ashamed of our words. Explanation by the tongue makes most things clear, but love unexplained is clearer.

THE SMILE
A junior manager, a senior manager and their boss are on their way to a meeting. On their way through a park, they come across a wonder lamp. They rub the lamp and a ghost appears. The ghost says, "Normally, one is granted three wishes but as you are three, I will allow one wish each."

So the eager senior manager shouted, I want the first wish. I want to be in the Bahamas, on a fast boat and have no worries." Pfufffff, and he was gone.

Now the junior manager could not keep quiet and shouted, "I want to be in Florida with plenty of food and drinks."

Pfufffff, and he was also gone.

The boss calmly said, "I want those two idiots back in the office after lunch!"

Lesson: "Always allow the bosses to speak first"
