THE
MESSAGE
Wait a Minute…
We hear this sentence repeatedly but did we ever contemplate the changes that
take place in a single minute? One minute seems very trivial and a very short
span of time, but on contemplation, one will realize what a human being can
accomplish in just a minute.
In one minute a person can walk a distance of two hundred yards, utter a hundred and fifty words, run four hundred yards, write forty words and read and understand more than three hundred words.
In one minute a person can take in and release four hundred and ten cubic inches of air from his lungs.
In one minute his heart pumps approximately five litres of blood into his blood vessels. In one minute the blood of a human body circulates in the entire body and returns to the heart. In one minute a healthy person's heart beats about seventy two times. In one minute a person breathes in and out about eighteen times.
These are the changes that occur in a human body. If we look around us, we will be shocked to learn of the changes that take place in the world in just a minute.
In one minute the earth revolves around its axis for a distance of nine hundred and fifty miles.
In one minute one thousand four hundred cubic feet of rain falls on the earth.
In one minute thirty five thousand tons of fresh water is released into the seas by the rivers.
In one minute the world’s population is increased by one hundred and fourteen whilst it is decreased by one hundred.
In one minute forty three marriages take place whilst three divorces take place.
In one minute six hundred thousand cigarettes are smoked and one hundred and ten thousand newspapers are sold.
In one minute two hundred and ten thousand telephone calls are made.
In one minute mankind drinks sixty three thousand eight hundred gallons of water and consumes four thousand tons of food.
In one minute three thousand three hundred tons of coal is mined.
In one minute seven hundred tons of steel is produced.
In one minute four thousand and six hundred shoes are manufactured and eighteen thousand cars are sold.
In one minute six thousand luminous meteors fall to the earth and thirty eight whirlpools appear on the earth.
How astonishing! All of this takes place in a mere span of sixty seconds for which we hold no value.
Rasulullah Sallallahu alaihi wasallam said, "Avail yourself of five things before five: Your youth before your old-age, your health before your illness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your occupation and your life before your death."
In another Hadith he said, "On the Day of Judgment, one of the questions put to every person would be regarding his age (life) and how he utilized it."

THE
STORY
Lateral Thinking
Many years ago in a small village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a
large sum of money to the village money lender. The money lender, who was
old and horrible, fancied the farmer's beautiful daughter. So he proposed
a bargain. He said he would forgo the farmer's debt if he could marry his
daughter. Both the farmer and his daughter were horrified by the proposal.
The cunning money lender suggested that they let providence decide the matter. He told them that he would put a black pebble and a white pebble into an empty money bag. Then the girl would have to pick one pebble from the bag.
1.
If she picked the black pebble, she would become his wife and her father's
debt would be forgiven.
2. If she picked the white pebble, she need not marry him and her father's
debt would still be forgiven.
3. But if she refused to pick a pebble, her father would be thrown into jail.
Standing on a pebble-strewn path in the farmer's field, the money lender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As he picked them up, the sharp-eyed girl noticed that he had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. He then asked the girl to pick a pebble from the bag.
Now, imagine that you were standing in the field that day. What would you have done if you were the girl? If you had to advise her, what would you have told her?
Careful
analysis would produce three possibilities:
1. The girl should refuse to take a pebble.
2. The girl should show that there were two black pebbles in the bag and expose
the money lender as a cheat.
3. The girl should pick a black pebble and sacrifice herself in order to save
her father from his debt and imprisonment.
Take a moment to ponder over this story. Experts use it to make people appreciate the difference between lateral and logical thinking. The girl's dilemma cannot be solved with traditional logical thinking. Think of the consequences if she chose any of the logical choices. What would you recommend the girl do?
Do not look at the answer yet, give your advise after a few minutes of your own lateral thinking...
Well, here is what she did. She put her hand into the moneybag and drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall onto the pebble-strewn path where it immediately became lost among all the other pebbles. "Oh, how clumsy of me," she said. "But never mind, if you look into the bag for the one that is left, you will be able to tell which pebble I picked." Since the remaining pebble was black, they had to assume that she had picked the white one. And since the moneylender dared not admit His dishonesty, the girl changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Most complex problems do have a solution, which you can find if you stretch your mind. If logic isn't working, try lateral thinking. Lateral thinking is a creative exercise. Practice it every day. "The secret to success is to know something nobody else knows."

cake tin, placing scones around the edge and in the centre of the cake tin
allowing room to spread. Bake at 220c for 15/20 minutes or until pale golden.
Leave in tin for a few minutes before turning out onto a cooling rack. Dust
with sifted icing sugar and serve warm.
COOKING
TIP
Tamarind tends to get very thick on grinding. So save some water to add to
the last churning, or to run in a mixer, after having emptied it by inverting
into a container. The stuck paste will dilute easily, when the machine is
run for a few seconds. Therefore cleaning is simplified and wastage Minimized.
POEM
"Veiled for life
I am safe, from the evil eye
My veil is my protection!
Like a precious jewel I am preserved in my home
My veil is my safety box!
My beauty is shown only to whom it is permissible
My veil is my honour!
I am only for my partner whom Allah has chosen
My veil is my chastity!
I remain in my palace of a loving family
My veil is my contentment!
I teach my kids the right way of life
My veil is my respect!
I pray to my Creator in the darkness of the night
My veil is my shining light!
I am looked at with respect and honour
My veil is my life!!
A THOUGHT
"Whatsoever Allah has given thee in His creation, which He has made sweet
to thee; yes, pleasant to thee and allowable. Take it, then, and cast not
thyself into the pangs of self-denial."
THE
SMILE
A man calls the Animal Control in his town, because there is a crazed gorilla
on his roof, and he can't figure out how to get it down safely. Soon, a van
pulls up, and an old man gets out, carrying a small dog, a baseball bat, and
a gun. He hands the man the gun.
''Okay, here's what we do. I'm going to go up onto your roof, and threaten the gorilla with this baseball bat until he falls down. When he falls down, this little dog will bite him until he's incapacitated.''
''Great,''
says the man. ''But what's the gun for?''
''In case I fall down instead of the gorilla — shoot the dog.''

NEWS
An
explosion on a train killed 64 people this morning near Panipat in the Haryana
Province in India. The Samjhauta express is known as the friendship train
between India and Pakistan. Some of the dead included Pakistani nationals.
The bombing is clearly aimed at derailing the peace process between India
and Pakistan. The passengers were on their way from Delhi to Lahore. Several
passengers, including women, children and old people, jumped out of the
burning train even as it was still moving. The foreign ministers of the
two countries were supposed to start peace talks tomorrow.
Eight US soldiers have been killed and 14 wounded after a helicopter crashed in south-eastern Afghanistan. Army officials say the helicopters engine failed. There are reports that the helicopter was a Chinook, which can carry around 30 people. The governor of the Zabul province Dilber Jan Arman says the crash was due to bad weather. Locals say the road was sealed for about an hour and a half as foreign soldiers moved into the area.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, says he and US president George W. Bush have agreed to shun the new Palestinian unity government. This will be the stance so long as Israel is not recognised by the Palestinians. Olmert says the American and Israeli positions are exactly the same.
Zimbabwean police fired tear gas and water cannon at protesters during and MDC rally in Harare yesterday. The Movement for Democratic Change says police had arrested more than 120 members while blocking the rally. Government officials say the MDC is being supported by other countries. Political tension is rising amid 80% unemployment, nearly 1 600% inflation, widespread poverty and food shortages.
General elections are underway in Lesotho. The All Basotho Convention has taken five of the eight constituencies released so far in. Lesotho's Congress for Democracy has taken the other three. A total of 80 constituencies need to be allocated. The head of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) observer mission has meanwhile praised the conduct of the poll. Counting of the vote is expected to last until tomorrow or Wednesday.
Saudi Arabia has asked the Dutch government to intervene over remarks by an anti-immigration politician who said Muslims should “tear out half the Qur’an”. The Saudi Arabian government has asked that Geert Wilders apologise for his anti – Islamic remarks. Wilders said in an interview with the daily De Pers on Feb. 13 that Muslims should throw away half their holy book if they wanted to stay in the Netherlands and that he would chase the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) out of the country if he were alive today. Last year Saudi Arabia withdrew its ambassador to Copenhagen over Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet, which provoked worldwide protests among Muslims. Wilders has campaigned to ban the veil, wants to freeze immigration and ban new mosques and religious schools. The Dutch news agency ANP quoted Wilders as saying yesterday he would not retract his remarks.
