ABU QATAADAH AL-ANSAARI RA

Al-Haarith bin Ribi'e Al-Ansaari Al-Khazraji Al-Salmi was the equestrian of the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him). There are inconsistencies as to whether he was present at Badr, or not. He did however; participate in the Battle of Uhud and those after it, according to observers.

The Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) praised him by saying: "Bless our horseman, Abu Qataadah". The Prophet (Peace be upon him), then supplicated for him by saying: "O Lord, bless his perception and his happiness". He then said to him: "May your honour prosper".

Abu Qataadah said to him: "May your honour thrive, O Messenger of Allah". When Abu Qataadah was stricken in his face, the Prophet (Peace be upon him) spit and he recovered.

He led several detachments. Of them, one of fifteen men that reached the Nejd, capturing two hundred camels, two thousand sheep and taking prisoners as well. At the time of the Battle of Hunain, Abu Qataadah left with the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and killed a man that intended inequity upon the Muslims. A man came with the dead enemies armour. He was disarmed and divested of the armour.

Abu Qataadah contested in law as far as the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him), who judged by it. He purchased with its value an orchard, which was the first property he acquired in Islam.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "O Muslim women! No one of you should consider insignificant (a gift) to give to her neighbour even if it is (a gift of) the trotters of a sheep". [Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary: This Hadith means that neighbours should present gifts to each other. The rich men and the poor according to their means. One who is poor should not think that what he is presenting to his neighbour is not worthy of giving. Even his humble gift, provided it is presented with sincerity, will find acceptance with Allah. According to the Noble Qur'an: "So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an ant (or a small ant) shall see it.'' (99:7)

It is, however, better for a rich person to present a gift which goes well with his means. He should not give anything to his neighbour which is stale or which he does not like for himself because apart from insincerity, such a thing shows his contempt for the neighbour while gift is, in fact, a token of sincerity and brotherhood.

The British teacher jailed in Sudan for allowing her students to name a teddy bear Mohammad has been pardoned. The teacher is expected to be released today.

Eastern Cape police report that a 32-year-old man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly raped his five-year-old step-daughter.

Six bogus traditional surgeons have been arrested in Port St. Johns in the Eastern Cape. Health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo says the suspects were in the process of performing illegal circumcisions on other boys in the area.
