UNDERSTANDING THE QUR’AN
Surah An-Nazi’at: 79: (Those Who Pull Out)
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICIENT, THE MOST MERCIFUL

(You will be resurrected) on the Day when the shocking event (i.e. the first blowing of the trumpet) will shock (everything), [6]
Followed by the next one (i.e. the second blowing of the trumpet.) [7]
Hearts, on that Day, will be throbbing, [8]
(And) their eyes will be downcast. [9]
They say, "Are we going to be brought back to our former state (of Life)? [10]
Is it when we will have turned into decayed bones?" [11]
They say, "If so, that will be a harmful return." [12]
So, it will be only a single harsh voice, [13]

COMMENTARY: Reward and Punishment in the Grave - The Surah thus far confirms that at the time of death, the angels will arrive and extract human souls. Then they will take them to the sky and swiftly transport them to their abodes, the good souls to the good abode and the bad souls to the bad one. There they will arrange means of reward or punishment and pain or comfort for them. The verses show that the reward and punishment will take place in the grave or Barzakh.

Thereafter the reward and punishment will be meted out on the Day of Judgement. Authentic Traditions give elaborate details of this. The reward or punishment of grave is experienced by the refined bodily soul which keeps connected with the grave whereas the abstract spirit remains in 'illiyyun (the upper level/the world of the souls), and it feels the effects of reward and punishment indirectly.

THE MESSAGE
TRACKING MISSED CALLS
-------------------------
Among the marvels of modern technology is also the ability to track the missed calls which were made by our friends and foes and the likes. We do not get a good night sleep, unless we have returned the calls of those who matter. We don't let any call go unanswered as long as we know that it matters. Don't we?

But how about the calls of "hay-yaa al-as-Salaah and hay-yaa al-al Falaah" made from the neighbourhood house of our Master - the Almighty Allah? Those calls are made five times a day and many a times they all go unanswered.

We do not either respond!!! Nor do we respect these missed calls. Do they matter?

Everybody can tell, if these really matter. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but surely in the Hereafter. Let us look at ourselves. Can we afford to let these calls of the Muathin (caller to prayer) be missed, day after day, after day.

The call from our Cherisher, Sustainer and the Ultimate Master. Just think about it. The next time you hear this call, just ask yourself how good a night’s sleep can I have by missing those calls from the house of Allah.

Think about it... the answer may come from the inner heart.

NEWS
US officials have met the South African government to inform them of plans for the new American military base for Africa.

Israeli Occupation Forces have again raided the Palestinian village of Bil'in. The Second Annual Bil'in International Conference, which will highlight non-violent resistance in Palestine, is scheduled to take place today.

Heavy fighting Islamic fighters and the government supported by Ethiopia continued yesterday in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. At least seven civilians were killed.

And finally yes, crime does happen in other countries as well. Thieves in Dubai have escaped with diamonds worth nearly R100-million. Armed robbery in the United Arab Emirates is a rare occurence.

Amnesty International yesterday said that Khalid Mahmood Rashid, may have appeared in court in Pakistan last week. He was deported from South Africa to Pakistan in 2005.

Britain's biggest journalists' union, The National Union of Journalists, has criticized Israel's military moves in Palestine.

Former deputy president Jacob Zuma says he is going ahead with legal action against media organisations. He spoke yesterday at the Cape Town Press Club.

The death of Dr Anwar Kadwa and his wife Munira again came to court yesterday. The doctor’s son, Riaz testified.

The health of South Africa's most-notorious, awaiting-trial prisoner, Annanias Mathe, is deteriorating rapidly. Mathe was reported to be wheelchair-bound and very weak. He is accused of attempted murder, rape, armed robbery, vehicle theft and house robbery.

Thousands of Americans are still mourning the death of 32 people killed at the Virginia Tech university campus in Blacksburg on Monday. It is believed a South Korean student carried out the mass murder.

RECIPE
Baked beans and cheese casserole
1 Tin baked beans - ¼ cup grated cheese - 1 tsp dhunia - ½ turmeric powder - 1 tsp chillie powder - 2 green chillies - ½ tsp salt - 1 onion finely sliced - 1 tomato sliced - 2 green peppers - 1 ½ cup macaroni - 2 tsp oil.

METHOD
Put macaroni in boiling water with salt and cook until done. Five minutes before macaroni is done, add one tsp of oil in pot. Drain and rinse in cold water, keep in colander. Fry onions in oil and when they become soft add pepper rings and fry till onions begin to change colour.

Add tomato and spices and cook gently till tomato is blended. Then add baked beans and toss well. Arrange ½ of beans curry rest of macaroni and the rest of beans curry. Bake in 350ºF (180º) oven for 10 minutes. Remove from oven sprinkle with grated cheese and bake till cheese melted.

COOKING TIP
To roast large Brinjals on an electric stove top, slice vertically into half right through the stem. Make shallow criss-cross cuts on the cut surface, and then apply a light film of oil on all surfaces. Roast both halves together on medium heat (turning now and then) for about 20 minutes. Then raise to high heat and roast for a few more minutes, till soft and limp and both sides are black. Cool thoroughly, and then carefully peel the skins off both sides. (Wipe over with damp fingers to clean). Mash and use as required.

A THOUGHT
I’ll be there!!!
If you have ever had to call a friend in the middle of the night, to take a sick child to hospital, or when your car has broken down some miles from home, you will know how good it feels to hear the phrase "I'll be there." Being there for another person is the greatest gift we can give. When we are truly present for other people, important things happen to them and us. We are renewed in love and friendship. We are restored emotionally and spiritually. Being there is at the very core of civility.

THE SMILE
A man was hitch hiking on a very dark night in the middle of a storm. The night was rolling by and there was hardly a car on the road. The storm was so strong that he could hardly see his feet in front of him. Suddenly a car came towards him and stopped. Without thinking, he got in and closed the door, just to realize that there was nobody behind the steering wheel. The car moved off slowly. He looked ahead and saw a curve in the road.

Scared, he started praying, begging for his life. He was terrified. Just before hitting the curve a hand appeared through the window and turned the steering wheel. The man, now paralyzed with fear, watched how the hand kept appearing every time they got to a curve.

Gathering all his courage, he jumped out and ran to the nearest lights he could see. Wet and in shock, he went into a motel and asked for a drink. After drinking it, he told everyone of the horrible experience he just had. Everyone was silent when they realized he was crying.

About half an hour later, two men came walking into the motel and, on seeing the terrified man, the one said to the other, "Look, Mfowetu (my friend), that's the idiot that got into the car while we were pushing it".
