Abu Hurayrah RA reported: Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said, "A Dinar you spend in Allah's way, or to free a slave, or as a charity you give to a needy person, or to support your family, the one yielding the greatest reward is that which you spend on your family". [Muslim]

Commentary: A Muslim is ordained to spend first of all on the need of his wife and children and their food and clothes. There is greater reward for him in this because these expenses are obligatory on him while spending on other items is in the nature of Nawafil. Obviously, one cannot forego the former for the latter.

When Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam arrived at Madinah, he initiated the formation of an Islamic state. After establishing political brotherhood and the authority of the state of Madinah, he began negotiations with various tribes around the city and made treaties with them.

When the Makkan unbelievers launched a series of attacks on Madinah, Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam was able to confront them, and when the Makkans were finally defeated in the battle of the Trenches (AI-Khandaq), he was able to make truce with them at Hudaybiyah for ten years. This treaty was a masterpiece of practical statesmanship on the part of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. read more

PERSONALITY
Abu-l Aas ibn ar-Rabiah RA
Abu-l Aas belonged to the Abd ash-Shams clan of the Quraysh. He was in the prime of his youth, handsome and very impressive looking. He was the epitome of Arab chivalry and was endowed with all the characteristics of pride, manliness and generosity. He took great pride in the traditions of his ancestors.

Abu-l Aas inherited the Quraysh love for trade. The Quraysh of course were known to be masters of the two annual trading expeditions. The winter expedition to the south, to Yemen, and the summer expedition to the north, to Syria. These two expeditions are mentioned in the Quran in the chapter named after the Quraysh.

The caravans of Abu-l Ads always plied between Makkah and Syria. Each caravan was made up of two hundred men and a hundred camels. People would entrust their wealth and their goods to him to trade on their behalf because of his skill as a merchant. His honesty and his trustworthiness. read more

RECIPE
Vegetable Kebaabs
1 packet ready made vegetable skewers with fresh rosemary or make up your own by threading chunks of fresh vegetables onto a wooden skewer.

Marinade
175ml olive oil - 15ml harissa paste - 15ml caraway seeds - Generous pinch of cumin and turmeric - 1-2 cloves of garlic.

Place vegetable skewers in dish big enough to have them in a single layer. Combine the mar5inade ingredients pour over vegetable kebabs and rub over kebabs. Leave for at least one hour to marinate. Just before eating place over coals or grill under a pre- heated grill until brown and cooked through. Serve immediately.

HANDY HINT
When space is at a minimum, bring in multifunctional units such as beds with drawers or stools with storage. Every inch counts!

THE SMILE
A professional juggler, driving to his next performance, is stopped by the police.
