HADITH, SAYINGS/TRADITIONS OF MUHAMMAD SAW
Thauban bin Bujdud RA narrates that the messenger of Allah, Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam said, "The most excellent Dinar (money) is one that a person spends on his family, and the Dinar which he spends on his riding-animal in the way of Allah, and the Dinar he spends on his companions in the way of Allah". [Muslim]

Commentary: This Hadith stresses that those of small means should first of all spend on their own families and children. It is in fact an act of great merit. After fulfilling their needs, if one still has something left with him then he can spend it on other items in the order of precedence mentioned in the Hadith.

THE MESSAGE
Behind Burqa, Student Gets an Education in Bigotry
By TRACY GORDON FOX, Courant Staff Writer
------------------------------------------

COLCHESTER -- Caitlin Dean was raised not to discriminate against others because of their race or religion. But as a white suburban teen of Italian and Irish descent, she often wondered what it would be like to be the target of such abuse.

She found out "behind the burqa." The 15-year-old freshman volunteered with a few other students to wear traditional Muslim clothing to school for an entire day in February after a Middle Eastern Studies teacher at Bacon Academy announced that she was looking for students to promote her class by wearing the garb. Caitlin covered her slender frame and short brown hair with a periwinkle burqa, which concealed her face.

The hateful and abusive comments she endured that day horrified teachers, the teen and many of her classmates. The remarks underscored a persistent animosity toward American Muslims that is driven largely by the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But they also opened up an important dialogue that could help teenagers in Colchester and across the state view the Muslim culture differently. read more

HANDY HINT
Divide your space according to what you will use it for the most. Make dining a priority in the dining room and then create tucked-away space to accommodate office supplies and equipment. Use closed storage solutions for your desk area (like a computer cabinet with doors) when it needs to be in an unusual spot, such as your dining room. This will make your office blend in with your room and not stick out like a sore thumb.

PERSONALITY
Adiyy Ibn Hatim RA
In the ninth year of the Hijra, an Arab king made the first positive moves to Islam after years of feeling hatred for it. He drew closer to faith (Iman) after opposing and combating it. And he finally pledged allegiance to the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam, after his adamant refusal to do so.

He was Adiyy, son of the famous Hatim at-Taai who was known far and wide for his chivalry and fabulous generosity. Adiyy inherited the domain of his father and was confirmed in the position by the Tayy people. Part of his strength lay in the fact that a quarter of any amount they obtained as booty from raiding expeditions had to be given to him.

When the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam announced openly his call to guidance and truth and Arabs from one region after another accepted his teachings, Adiyy saw in his mission a threat to his position and leadership. Although he did not know the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam personally, and had never seen him, he developed strong feelings of enmity towards him. He remained antagonistic to Islam for close upon twenty years until at last Allah opened his heart to the religion of truth and guidance. read more

A THOUGHT
"I miss you."
Perhaps more marriages could be saved and strengthened if couples simply and sincerely said to each other "I miss you." This powerful affirmation tells partners they are wanted, needed, desired and loved. Consider how ecstatic you would feel, if you received an unexpected phone call from your spouse in the middle of your workday, just to say "I miss you."

THE SMILE
Five Minutes

A hospital posted a notice in the nurse's lounge saying: “Remember, the first five minutes of a human being's life are the most dangerous.”
Underneath, a nurse had written: “The last five are pretty risky, too.”
